The Seshen - Unravel (2014)
The “Unravel” EP, out 6th October, is the first release on Tru Thoughts from new signing The Seshen, a seven-piece band from the Bay Area, San Francisco, who have built a burgeoning fanbase through a handful of online tracks as well as live support dates for the likes of tUnE-yArDs, Thundercat and Hiatus Kaiyote.
Mixing live and electronic elements, and taking influence from sources including psychedelia, hip-hop, pop, R&B, West African music, dub and indie rock, The Seshen create beat-driven compositions with a strong emotional core. Striking a chord with fans and bloggers from first listen, a set of early tunes on Bandcamp inspired comparisons to J Dilla, Little Dragon, Beach House and Erykah Badu. Among the ensuing surge of industry interest they found a perfect home among the eclectic, soulful roster of Tru Thoughts, inking a deal in Spring 2014 to take it to the next level.
Providing the immersive backdrop for the two complementary vocalists, Lalin St Juste and Akasha Orr, are bassist/producer Aki Ehara, drummer Chris Thalmann, keyboard/synth player Mahesh Rao, percussionist Mirza Kopelman and synchronizer/sampler Kumar Butler. Manipulating an array of technology alongside more traditional instruments and acoustic percussion, they complement Lalin and Akasha’s vivid poetic imagery with heavily layered electronic textures for a heady atmosphere that blurs the distinction between the abstract and the familiar.
This close-knit group was born from the relationship between Lalin and Aki, a (now married) couple who met while studying in Ghana and bonded over music. On their return to the States, they started collaborating together and gradually built the band through jam sessions with their circle of friends. The spark of love and chemistry within this gang, alongside the sense of ‘anything is possible’ that they grew up with in the Bay Area’s diverse and successful music scene, feeds into a compellingly creative experience both live and on record.
The “Unravel” EP sees The Seshen’s admirably experimental approach maturing and coalescing into something very special, a signature sound that flies out of the speakers, fizzing with imagination, emotion and a sense of adventure. Lyrically, the six cuts delve into the human condition, and the lead track is an impactful statement of intent, with a muscular, aggressive backdrop playing host to an impossibly silken vocal verse and contrasting chorus that explore with grace how an unravelling relationship can chip away at the identities of those involved. With its magnetic hook, second track “Oblivion” finds Lalin thinking about those in her life who have struggled with addiction, and the heartbreak and uncertainty that always accompany it; influences from Hudson Mohawke and Panda Bear to James Blake are apparent in the vibrant composition, and Aki’s use of an 8bit Chip Tune synth is apt to create a subconscious nostalgia in those he refers to as “the Nintendo generation”. “Shapes”, a philosophical song with a more meditative slant, features samples of the cloud chamber bowls, a unique instrument invented by Harry Partch, a composer and instrument maker from Oakland CA, which Aki was drawn to for what he describes as “interesting tuning idiosyncrasies that give them a beautiful unstable and otherworldly quality”.
A delicately unhinged dance-pop sensibility combines with a murky undertow on “Turn”, while The Seshen layer their own version of a four-on-the-floor groove with a freeform vocal on “The Fall”, the fractured vulnerability of the lyrics glimpsed as if in the mirror of a glitterball. “2000 Seasons” lyrically explores the phenomenon of people staking a claim on the land, bodies and lives of others and its title is taken from Ayi Kwei Armah’s book, Two Thousand Seasons, about the colonization of Africa; in keeping with its grand thematic arc, the sonic backdrop achieves the band’s twin aims of psychedelia and danceability in characteristically ambitious style.

Gerardo Frisina - Movement (2014)
Gerardo Frisina has established
himself throughout the years as one of the finest interpreters of the
Latin-influenced Jazz club sound. Four years after the release of "Join
the Dance", he returns on Schema with a brand new album, "Movement".
Gerardo's contribution to the history of Italian Jazz is remarkable: along with his activity as a producer, his work has been pivotal in uncovering rare Italian and European Jazz for international audiences, thus reviving this rich heritage.
The studio is where he feels at home: his recent activity has been considerable, with a multitude of projects and single releases, and finally, a new album. Like a gifted movie director, he conducts with delicacy and mastery a fine ensemble of musicians, bringing into these recordings the outcome of lifelong research into sound. His fifth full-length album summarizes his experiences, his endless listening sessions and experiments with different music cultures.
Here are 12 pieces describing another amazing journey through Gerardo's rich and exotic influences: these are the adventures of a European Jazz man immersed in Afro-Cuban inspirations. Gerardo'¼s love for Cuban music is wellknown.
Jazz had been influenced by Cuban music since its early days and Gerardo's blend of this tradition has become a trademark. His fans will not be disappointed by "Movement" and the uninitiated will discover the manifold nuances of his sound.
"Movement" though, contains a new musical perspective - a more Afro-Funk approach that we can feel on tracks like "The Talisman" or "Mystic Latin", with hot drum breaks that will set fire to the dance floor. This could be how would Manu Dibango or Fela Kuti sound in 2014!
"What is Jazz?" is how fine Jazz house music should be: a classy dance piece with a charming vibraphone, beautiful flute improvisations over strong acoustic percussion.
"Eastern Vibration - Shout it Out" is a unique homage and tribute to the spiritual Jazz of the late 60s and early 70s. The only track featuring vocals, is a medley of a theme by the saxophonist Charles Williams and an original composition.
Gerardo's music has the indisputable power of creating cinematic atmospheres - a not-so unconscious inspiration, since his love for rare and exotic soundtrack is well-known. Take for instance "Reporter", which resounds indeed with notes of an old TV opening theme on investigative reports, bringing to mind frenetic action.
And action is what "Movement" commands to the mind: a sound that finds its natural environment in small and warm clubs - intimate places where dancers release their energy and celebrate life.
"Movement" is a soundtrack of warm and summary vibes that will stay with us for a long time.

Alex Puddu - The Golden Age Of Danish Pornography Vol. 2 (2014)
Alex Puddu (b. 1967, Rome) moved to Copenhagen in the late 1980s, shortly after the start of his musical career. He is a true devotee of the vintage 1970s Italian giallo/politziottesco and horror films, taking his inspiration from such luminaries as Morricone, Umiliani and Piccioni. He has written music for a number of soundtrack albums, including this volumes predecessor release, The Golden Age of Danish Pornography. The Danish films related to this and its earlier companion CD release are from 1964-1971, a period of time overlapping the 1969 legalization of pornography in Denmark. The original footage, of great quality, had no sound and couldnt be released for public viewing until soundtracks were written. To quote Jan Schmidt, a crucial figure in this story and friend of Mr. Puddu, I knew that Alex would instantly understand the direction I wanted the soundtrack to go in for the first collection of short films. The end results of his work are nothing less than mind-blowing. It simply suited the films perfectly. Now we have The Golden Age Of Danish Pornography Vol. 2, another great collection of films, put together again to Alexs music.

Guts - Hip Hop After All (2014)
Without hip-hop, Guts wouldn’t be half the producer he is today. Hip-hop as inspiration, a gateway to so many different musical styles, the trigger for a continually expanding musical bulimia, the springboard from which he dived into a bottomless musical well.
Hip-hop – which has been Guts’ true love for the last 25 years, despite its taking futile, gangsta and materialistic paths.
Hip-hop – which in quarter of a century has driven him to spend whole nights with samplers, drum machines, expanders and vinyl, tapping on pads, adjusting the drums and honing his samples.
Hip-hop – which is often done remotely nowadays by sending digital files back and forth. Guts has opted to make it shine like when it was all brand new, decided after three entirely instrumental albums to re-establish contact with rappers, vocalists, jazz players and soul men by packing up his productions and heading across the Atlantic to record them in their home surroundings in New York and California.
Backed up on production by the inexhaustible DJ Fab (Hip Hop Resistance) and supported from Paris by his label Heavenly Sweetness (“A French label spreading colourful music for the soul”), Guts explores a host of styles, flows and atmospheres to build up a mosaic of 16 tracks, each nestling inside the other to form a single concept: Hip Hop After All.
1. Hip Hop First of All
2. Open Wide (feat. Lorine Chia)
3. The Forgotten (Don’t Look Away) (feat. Quelle Chris & Denmark Vessey)
4. Go for Mine (feat. Tanya Morgan)

D'Angelo - Black Messiah (2014)
The wait is finally over! D’Angelo and The Vanguard’s highly anticipated and much buzzed about brand new album, Black Messiah, is available today (12/15/14) at select digital and retail music providers. The studio recorded version of “Really Love” from Black Messiah, will be serviced to radio today.
Nearly 15 years in the making, Black Messiah contains 12 tracks of timeless music with poignant and provocative lyrics that requires repeat listening at maximum volume! On the album, D’Angelo is joined by his band, The Vanguard, alongside Pino Palladino, James Gadson and Questlove on various tracks on the album. All lyrics were written by D’Angelo in addition to Q-Tip and Kendra Foster who both wrote lyrics on several songs. With the high quality of live musicianship featured on the album, it’s important to note that “No digital ‘plug-ins’ of any kind were used in this recording. All of the recording, processing, effects and mixing was done in the analog domain using tape and mostly vintage equipment.”
D’Angelo had this to say about Black Messiah in the album’s forward:
"‘Black Messiah’ is a hell of a name for an album. It can be easily misunderstood. Many will think it’s about religion. Some will jump to the conclusion that I'm calling myself a Black Messiah. For me the title is about all of us. It's about the world. It's about an idea we can all aspire to. We should all aspire to be a Black Messiah. It’s about people rising up in Ferguson and in Egypt and in Occupy Wall Street and everyplace where a community has had enough and decides to make change happen. It's not about praising one charismatic leader but celebrating thousands of them. Not every song on this album is politically charged (though many are) but calling this album Black Messiah creates a landscape where these songs can live to the fullest. Black Messiah is not one man. It's a feeling that, collectively, we are all that leader."
1. Ain't That Easy
2. 1000 Deaths
3. The Charade
4. Sugah Daddy
5. Really Love
6. Back To the Future (Part I)
7. Till It's Done (Tutu)
8. Prayer
9. Betray My Heart
10. The Door
11. Back To the Future (Part II)

BADBADNOTGOOD - III (2014)
BADBADNOTGOOD is a young supremely talented trio of musicians made up of
Matthew Tavares on keys, Chester Hansen on bass, and Alex Sowinski on
drums. Since their inception at Humber College’s Music Performance
program in 2011, the three have challenged the rule book on improvised
instrumental music and taken jazz tradition into the future.
With early champions including acclaimed BBC broadcaster Gilles Peterson and Tyler The Creator who helped fuel their discovery with a series of live jams that instantly went viral and dubbed them the “Odd Trio”, the band released their first EP BBNG in June 2011 to wide praise. The marriage of jazz virtuosity and hip hop source material offered a fresh take on the traditional “standard” applied to hip hop classics by taking on choice cuts from the golden era rap cannon and writing inspired arrangements for them instead of one-dimensional covers.
The band hit a landmark by introducing original material into their composi- tions with BBNG2 in 2012. New songs like “Rotten Decay”, “Vices” or “UWM” carried on the proud heritage of musical juxtaposition by bringing together jazz, hip hop, punk, and dance music into vigorous balance. Since then, they’ve won praise from the four corners of the globe and collaborated with Frank Ocean, Earl Sweatshirt, MF Doom, Pharaoh Monch and RZA among many. Their no- torious live performances have brought fans across the whole musical spectrum together, taking the band around the world from Coachella to Glastonbury.
Now, the inseparable friends are prepping to release their biggest project to date III on prodigious young label Innovative Leisure, a highly-anticipated project ushering in the group’s newest explorations which are proving to be limitless.

Hokis Pokis - The Magic of Hokis Pokis (2014)
Formed in 1970, Hokis Pokis was a seminal band in the New York disco scene with a handful of underground local hit singles including the highly-sought after “Nowhere” “Find What You’re Looking For” and “City Rhythm”.
Releasing several singles from the mid ‘70s all the way to the ’80s, Luv N’Haight has compiled all of Hokis Pokis’ musical output into an album which also includes 2 previously unreleased tracks. Remixed and remastered digitally from the original master tapes, the versions on the album are elevated from the already amazing originals with a cleaner sound and harder-hitting bottom end, bridging the gap between dancefloor fanatics in disco’s heyday to their modern day counterparts. Never before seen photos along with corresponding liner notes from DJhistory.com’s Bill Brewster are included in the deluxe double-LP package, telling the story of a group of friends that embark on a musical journey that continues to this day. From the beginning of disco’s rise to its inevitable decline, hitting a low point with the “Disco Sucks” movement, to its eventual resurgence in popularity with today’s dance-culture, Hokis Pokis has remained together bonded by friendship first, coupled with a shared musical vision that continues to endure.
Look for Under the Influence of Hokis Pokis album later in the year featuring heavyweight producers Kon, DJ Spun, Citizen Kane, Al Kent, DJ Day and others who all take their turn creating new, original dancefloor classics from the original multi-tracks.

Tony Allen - Film of Life (2014)
For his tenth album, the human metronome of afrobeat has pulled out all the stops. At his side are The Jazzbastards, a trio of producers at the cutting edge of contemporary sound, and fellow world-class musicians, including Damon Albarn, who continues to build pioneering bridges between Africa and today’s music scene. Tony Allen has given us an album that has the ring of a true self-portrait, an overview of his rich and exemplary career that brings together bebop, afrobeat jazz and psychedelic pop. For the wizard of Lagos, who has always thought of his drums “as an orchestra” and who likes “to make them sing”, Film of Life marks the pinnacle of his achievement.

Once again experimenting in soundscapes between footwork ("Safed", "Only 1 Way 2 Know"), hip-hop and jungle/drum&bass ("More Than Friends", "Boxoff") to forge a unique sound that he has come to own, Stewart creates a subtle homage that nods to the past while staying firmly future-facing.

Taylor McFerrin - Early Riser (2014)
Brooklyn-based producer, composer, pianist, DJ and live musician Taylor McFerrin is set to release his first full length LP, Early Riser, in June 2014 on Flying Lotus's Brainfeeder record label. Taylor's musical style is equally influenced by the legends of 60s/70s Soul, the kings of the Modern Beat Generation, Golden Era hip hop, free form jazz and electronic music. By playing all of the instruments on his productions, while also relying heavily on sampling and chopping up his live takes, he has found a sound that seamlessly bridges myriad musical worlds and draws the listener into a constantly shifting audio soundscape. “I spent years laying down tons of tracks,” McFerrin explains, “and I got into a really bad habit of never really finishing anything. So this last year the concept was – let me go back and find all the stuff that really felt right, the stuff that felt like an honest moment of creation for me, and just force myself to finish those tracks.”
From the opening build of “Postpartum” onwards, you know you’re in for something pretty special with “Early Riser”. It’s a smouldering, woozy and intensely beautiful record. Tracks like “Degrees of Light” and “Stepps” establish a sun-up mood in their opening few bars and then develop it, the organic live feel perfectly balanced by the the snap of their programming. If McFerrin’s own voice on a track like “Florasia” adds a genuine neo-soul emotion, his guests are sensational. From Nai Palm of Melbourne's Hiatus Kaiyote on “The Antidote”, through Emily King on “Decisions” (“one of the best singers alive in my opinion” – McFerrin) and on to labelmate RYAT’s collaboration on “A Place In My Heart”, each adds a different mood and lift to the music they’re involved with. Taylor’s father, the legendary Bobby McFerrin, teams up with Brazilian master Cesar Mariano on “Invisible/Visible” for one of the jazziest moments on the record. Robert Glasper, Thundercat and Marcus Gilmore also provide their substantial jazz chops to “Already There”. But the key to the whole record is the balance which McFerrin keeps throughout – between his guest's individuality and his own vision, between the styles of music he loves, between a feeling of intense, sunlit joy and a deep aching sadness, which, it could be argued, is a definition of soul.
Since creating a major buzz with his first EP, Broken Vibes, McFerrin has toured worldwide as a one man show and has played major festivals such as Lollapalooza, Glastonbury, The Big Chill, and Gilles Peterson's Worldwide Festival. In his home base of New York City, he has performed at such legendary venues as The Apollo, The Blue Note, Radio City Music Hall and The Lincoln Jazz Center opening up for artists such as Erykah Badu, The Roots, Nas, Talib Kweli and Robert Glasper. In addition to producing and performing, Taylor has served as the Head Instructor of the pioneering Beat Rockers program over the past 4 years, teaching beatboxing and musical self-expression to students who are blind and/or have multiple disabilities at the Lavelle School for the Blind in the Bronx.
Taylor's ability to create and evolve musically by drawing inspiration from all corners of his life translates into a music of exceptional honesty and emotional directness, deep sophistication and effortless style.

Ray Lugo & The Boogaloo Destroyers - Que Chevere! (2014)
Ray Lugo's mind is very fertile, and he's been
rather prolific over the last decade, putting out a variety of groovy
sounds ranging from organic to electronic, afrobeat to soul, Latin to
Brazilian and many different sorts of mashup/fusions in between. But,
just because he is creatively fecund doesn't mean the quality suffers -
each album is hand-crafted and Ray takes his time to shape and mold it
to just the right proportions.
So when Ray told me he had some new music he was working on, I didn't know what to expect, but I knew it was going to be sabroso, whatever the ingredients. Turned out it was his second Latin soul record with the Boogaloo Destroyers, and destroy the dance floor is just what they will do when you put this record on the Hi-Fi. The title of the album translates loosely as "how groovy!" and it's a very apt one. The Boogaloo Destroyers' sound is inspired by the warmth, diversity, and youthful spirit of classic New York Latin Boogaloo of the 1960s, yet at the same time, as composer and lead vocalist, Ray feels he is bringing some of his afrobeat sensibilities and vocal personality to the proceedings, to make it fresh for today's audiences. He also told me he feels the Boogaloo Destroyers serve the dual purpose of emphasizing his pride in being Latino as well as helping to build a musical bridge for people from around to world to come together and learn a little bit about each other, and with this sophomore release, he's gonna do just that. When I asked him to talk about the songs, he offered some entertaining insights:
¡Que Chevere! (My Baby's Got Latin Soul): talking about non-Latin gals that still got that soul!
Ven Al Jala Jala: ¡puro vacilón! (a pure ass-shaking time)!
C'mon Everybody: I don't now why but KC And The Sunshine band came to mind when thinking about this one. A simple call to everyone to come and dance the sweet boogaloo.
El Ritmo De Nueva York: I wanted to feature some real descarga tunes as we lacked those on the first album. Also wanted to show NYC pride.
La Tumba De Fu Manchu: had a strange dream with a kung fu savant coming out of cave. Also was intrigued with mixing a boogaloo them on top of a cumbia beat = cumbialoo!
Hong Kong Shin-A-Ling: I lived in Spanish Harlem for a couple of years in my 20s above a Chinese chicken wing spot and my girl used to work at Tower Records on 4th Street. She would take home videos for us to watch after hours and always stopped at the Chinese spot and picked up some chicken wings to accompany our movie watching.
Terremoto: another descarga track bringing about an earthquake as a result.
Batongo: I love 'Watusi Boogaloo' by Willie Rosario so wanted to have a similar tune but with a character of its own, putting my stamp on it. On a trip I took to Cuba in 1999 I encountered a fellow the neighbors called 'Batongo' and he used to love to eat kimbombo (okra) with rice, so he was the inspiration for this.
I want to leave you, the listener, with this thought Ray shared with me recently: In a hyper difficult music environment Ray has had the great fortune to bring so many of his concepts to life, and he feels this new boogaloo album has come at the perfect time in his career. Now is a time in his life when he's never been more comfortable making music, and he feels blessed to be finding himself constantly amazed by people's kind consideration of his work. After they hear this one, I can assure you Ray, the deal will be sealed!

Cookin' on 3 Burners - Blind Bet (2014)
It's hard to believe that it's been 5 years since Cookin On 3 Burners released 'Soul Messin' the incredible album that included their massive crossover smash single 'This Girl',
of which the vinyl 45 ended up being one of those records that was
changing hands for crazy prices among the record collecting cognoscenti.
The long wait has certainly been worth it, as Blind Bet not only ticks all the boxes you would expect from the band (the best in contemporary soul-jazz, funk and amazing production) but the musical textures they create are more varied and eclectic than ever before. The album opens with the minimalist, crisp funk of Skeletor, which is promptly followed by Flat On My Back featuring Tex Perkins on vocals, which is an excursion into swampy blues territory with more than a hint of Tom Waits' gritty delivery.
Blind Bet is awash in fantastic vocal guest spots, and international chart topper Daniel Merriweather completely nails his vocals on Losin' Streak, and can now proudly add Cookin On Three Burners to his musical CV.. alongside Mark Ronson and a long list of movers & shakers.
There is more than just a hint of a film soundtrack influence on the instrumental Blind Bet, as horns, a soaring string section and heavy percussion evoke the film scores of Oliver Nelson, John Barry and other celluloid composers and arrangers - this track cries out to be the them tune of a handsome spy who is saving the world whilst sipping a cocktail.
The soundtrack influence continues on The Spanish Job - in addition to the wonderfully twangy, surf style guitar meshes with the tough backbeat to create a truly original and unusual sound.
Long time and much loved CO3B collaborator Kylie Auldist features more than once on the album, and on 'Mind Made Up' Kylie proves beyond doubt, that she is one of the premier contemporary soul vocalists working today. The snappy drums, crisp guitar and Jake Masons' organ work all compliment the vocals, whilst lush horns and strings lift this catchy track into total classic status!
Blind Bet is a strong and welcome return for Cookin' On 3 Burners, musically open minded to keep things fresh - but of course rooted in all that's best in modern rootsy soul & funk - just as you'd expect!
