SHYGUY - Wait, What. Now?

‘Wait, What. Now?’ is the debut album from Nottingham duo SHYGUY (AKA Jackson Goodwin and Joe Digioia). The project weaves a kaleidoscope of genres, fusing soul, psychedelic vocals, jazz and raw but funky hip hop drums. SHYGUY confront their introverted nature, adopting vibrant personas, as a result, this introverted collaboration evolves into an extroverted expression, contributing to their textured sound which is perfectly embodied in the focus track “Grass Is Green”.

Musically the album showcases clusters of unconventional textures, with ‘Wait, What. Now?’ featuring dual single "I'm So Trash / Long Time" - the self-deprecating humour of “I'm So Trash”, balanced by the introspection of “Long Time”, all channelled through the lens of a beatmaker, bedroom producer approach to composition.

Carrying personal significance “Grass Is Green” was the last song written for the album, it symbolises the draw to an end in more than one way. The track's lyrics are a heartfelt expression of appreciation for Jackson's partner, conveying the profound influence she has had on his life, inspiring personal growth and providing solace during darker times. The title itself, a clever play on the adage, "the grass is greener on the other side," aptly encapsulates its theme. “Grass Is Green” organically grew from Joe's guitar riff which creates cohesion as the track transitions, Jackson expresses his admiration “It’s a favourite of mine to perform and I love the two main guitar riffs Joe wrote.”

Jackson, hailing from a family of artists and illustrators, initially ventured into music as a form of teenage rebellion. He picked up a bass guitar and soon discovered that music was his true calling. Inspired by the likes of J-Dilla and the LA Beat Scene, Jackson immersed himself in music production. On the other hand, Joe's musical path began at the age of 11 when he self-taught himself the guitar. His fascination with the instrument's capabilities and the desire to create his own music led him on a journey of self-discovery. Through the guidance of his guitar teacher, he delved into recording and production, setting the stage for his future endeavours.

Jackson explains, "I can't imagine doing anything else. I come from a family of artists and have always felt that music is the most beautiful aspect of human culture. Writing music feels like a type of meditation or sanctuary for me. Ultimately, I want to create something that will move other people in the same way that some of the most personally influential records I listened to growing up moved me."

Joe adds, "I've always been hugely inspired by other musical artists and the work they produce. Some songs are able to involve such strong emotions from me that I become inspired to try and replicate those feelings in my own music. Equally, I've always played music (primarily guitar) for the sake of enjoyment and therapy."

The duo met during their school years, discovering their shared love of music through playing in punk bands together, but their musical journey truly took flight when they reunited in college. SHYGUY draw inspiration from a diverse range of sources. Jackson's upbringing exposed him to a rich musical tapestry, from Erykah Badu to The Smiths, and the artistry of Prince and Damon Albarn. Joe's early influences included guitar-centric bands like Green Day, leading him to explore artists like Prince and Tame Impala, who created diverse music on their own terms.

Ol' Burger Beats - 74: Out of Time

Ol’ Burger Beats’s new opus, 74: Out of Time, is a multifaceted and stunning exploration of sounds and eras. In addition to every track being produced at 74 beats per minute, the album harks back to the year 1974; particularly the music, the records, the activism, the artwork, and the aesthetics. But it’s also incredibly current, as the Out of Time portion of the title very much refers to the present. It promotes a sense of urgency in the face of current affairs such as the COVID-19 pandemic, climate change, as well as contentious politics sweeping across the US and Europe.

Beyond those deeply resonating elements to the record, 74: Out of Time is a truly gorgeous representation of hip-hop through the lens of the Norwegian composer. Using 74bpm as his basis, he constructs sublime, jazzy instrumentals that feature some of hip-hop’s finest emcees and vocalists. And to say they all gel perfectly together is an understatement—and it would be underselling OBB’s meticulous approach here.

Each song blends seamlessly from one to the next spread across the album’s 17 tracks, with the help from a standout supporting cast that includes Fly Anakin, Awon, Quelle Chris, Pink Siifu, billy woods, lojii, YUNGMORPHEUS, Tha God Fahim, Vic Spencer and Vuyo, among several others.

While there’s a sense of tension to the track titles and certainly some of the lyrics, the album’s pacing of 74bpm releases and soothes that tension at the same time. “It's quite an unusual tempo for hip-hop I think,” OBB says. “It’s both really relaxed but at the same time it can feel hard-hitting and modern if you match it with the right vocals and the right flow.” He certainly achieved that flow with this LP, which is undoubtedly his finest and most ambitious undertaking to date.

74: Out of Time is available now via Coalmine Records. The album may be streamed through all major DSPs, and can be purchased on cassette and vinyl with various merch bundles available.

Audrey Powne - Feed The Fire

Feed the Fire is the lead single from multi-instrumentalist Audrey Powne's forthcoming From the Fire LP and what an introduction it is to the Melbourne based artist's much anticipated debut album. Building on Audrey's already impressive international reputation as a performer and session musician, she has received plaudits from Gilles Peterson, Maceo Parker and Masta Ace amongst others.

With music and lyrics composed by Audrey, Feed the Fire is a track written in response to the Australian bushfires of 2019 and their undeniable link to the climate crisis and the Government's unwillingness to acknowledge this connection.

Combining dramatic strings with a powerful and emotion fuelled vocal, a dark harmony and a climactic trumpet solo Feed The Fire is a track that fuses a Neo-Soul and Jazz feel with a tough drum break and a production that is reminiscent of the quality of a Charles Stepney track. With Audrey combining composition and lyric writing duties with trumpet, vocals and string arrangements on Feed the Fire, it is very much her production values evident here.

This wonderful single package will also include the instrumental version not available on the vinyl LP and remixes by BBE stalwarts Atjazz and the New York maestros musclecars. Both remixes showcase Atjazz and musclecars signature styles at honing in on moods and rhythms in Audrey’s composition and translating them into certified dancefloor bangers. Definitely tracks needed for any serious DJ's cannon in 2024.

Orgone - Chimera

Orgōne is a pillar of West Coast soul music, maintaining an unmissable touring presence for more than a decade. The group’s arresting intensity, impeccable playing style, and undeniable, irresistible chemistry have earned them the reputation as one of the tightest bands of the modern era. Fresh off of doubling as the studio band for discodelic sensation Say She She and circling the globe as the live band for their wildly successful world tour, Orgōne is back in California and coming in hot with Chimera, a fire-breathing spectacle of psychedelic Afro-soul. Produced by Sergio Rios (Neal Francis, Say She She), Chimera is an electrifying, dream-like odyssey, tripping through the hazy swamps of New Orleans, weaving textures of entrancing voodoo soul, thrumming Afro-funk, and stoney psych-rock.

In Chimera, the heavy-hitting new LP from Orgōne, out February 9th, 2024 on 3 Palm Records, the Los Angeles-based outfit carves tough, gritty, infectious grooves into heady dance rhythms. Taking its name from a mythical beast with the head of a lion, the body of a goat, and the tail of a serpent, Chimera conjures a state that is at once trance-like and heart-poundingly exciting. The album offers a spellbinding mix of cathartic instrumentals, dub voyages, and soulful vocal performances by Jamie Allensworth, Terin Ector, and Congolese musical alchemist Mermans “Mofaya” Mosengo.

Known for their gripping instrumentals and incendiary live show, the band is firing on all cylinders and the earned confidence of this time-tested, cult-favorite crew is on display throughout Chimera. Describing the process of producing and engineering this psych-funk showcase, guitarist and Orgōne co-founder Sergio Rios says, “The album really took form organically. It’s raw and dark with a hopeful thread throughout that’s highlighted by the incredible soul singers we work with. There's a looseness to most of the cuts, giving the album the feeling of a shadowy dream.” With Chimera, the band has tapped into a deeper version of themselves. The sounds are fresh yet classic, the grooves are ferocious and infectious, and the vocal performances are captivating.

The album opens like a heady puff of smoke in the face with “Hallowed Dreams,” drawing the listener into a state where reality blurs and the music takes control. The focus track, “Zum Zum,” is a hooky Afro-funk dance floor heater that synchronizes your heart rate to its propulsive percussion, the hypnotic rhythm building into a raucous, psychedelic climax. Mermans “Mofaya” Mosengo sings in his native Lingala, jabbing and weaving around the rhythm section’s chugging force with his gruff and soulful voice. On the raw and rousing “Tula Muisi (Dance Like Them),” a tapestry of Afrobeat and heavy psych-rock bolsters Mosengo’s call for unity and respect, which translates to “Hear the music, and dance like them.”

On “Lies & Games,” Terin Ector brings yearning soul vocals to this righteous lament of the rocky road to redemption over grimy rhythm guitar, spaced-out synths, breakbeat-worthy drums, and haunting Wailers-inspired backing vocals. “Parasols” is a jaunty, head-bobbing slab of greasy New Orleans funk, and a heartfelt nod to Josie-era Meters and the unmistakable early 70s-era production of Allen Toussaint. The instrumental serves up a punchy, slightly tipsy rhythm that sways with sweetly melodic gospel-tinged organ.

Drawing on multicultural influences of Afrobeat, Southern soul, psych-rock, and raw funk, Chimera bridges the darkest reaches of psychedelia to the highest peaks of joyful dance music. With easy SoCal swagger, deep New Orleans roots, and a profound reverence for the sounds of the African diaspora, Orgōne creates a unique, transporting experience that feels untethered to any single place or time. Relentlessly vibey and immersive from start to finish, Orgōne’s newest LP feels like a sustained hypnagogic hallucination — the place between waking and sleep where reality is fluid and anything feels possible.

From its inception, Orgōne has always been a chimera — a multifaceted creation and the physical manifestation of impossible quixotic dreams. Chimera will delight fans of early Orgōne while showcasing the band’s effortless and endless ability to shape-shift. It’s an electrifying, mesmerizing record sure to exceed expectations and keep the listener rapt.
