VA - 10 Years of Rhythm Section International

Rhythm Section International, the impossible-to-define label founded in South East London by Bradley Zero in 2014 has reached the ripe old age of 10 years. Funny thing is, it feels like it could have been almost double that. It’s hard to imagine the Landscape of the London music scene without this foundational force whose influence is felt more than ever.

With this special anniversary release, the label takes stock at this milestone to present a compilation in 3 parts: PAST, RE-IMAGINED AND FUTURE: honouring the labels tradition of always paying homage to what has come before while setting sights firmly forwards.
.
With 100-odd releases in their extended back catalogue covering every imaginable style and boasting influence in every inhabited continent on earth, it’s been quite a decade for the independent label, which began on a shoestring budget with funds made via the now legendary Rhythm Section pool hall parties in Peckham.

From humble beginnings to an era defining output - few would have predicted the slow and steady rise of the imprint and the impact it has had on generations of Dj’s, musicians and listeners - at home and abroad.

Spanning 6 discs and 30 tracks, the compilation begins by taking us on a walk down memory lane and presenting one track from each year of the labels output - highlighting some forgotten classics from the archives over the first 2 discs.

For discs 3 & 4, the label invited it’s stable of artists to pick a track from the back catalogue to re-imagine in their own style. This process resulted in some incredibly playful contributions from the likes of Ruf Dug, Session Victim and Private Joy - whose playful reinterpretations add new depth to old material.

Finally, the last 2 discs are entirely new material for 2024, carrying the torch of the previous SHOUTS compilations - whose sole aim is to shine light on new music from emerging artists. Stand outs include new work by RONI, Gayance, douniah & Dhanya as well as a cheeky contribution from old label mate Jordan Rakei under his Frank Liin alias. As ever, moods range from peak time dancefloor energy (Bamao Yende & Low Jack) to slow Sunday morning incantations (Cousin Kula), further showcasing the breadth of the label and it’s knack to eschew classification whilst still connecting it’s releases through an indefinable musical thread.

Rhythm Section is for everyone, Rhythm Section speaks to the post-tribal musical generation. Rhythm Section is alternative, soulful and above all, heartfelt.

Rhythm Section Forever

Phil Dawson Quintet - Don't Waste Your Ancestors' Time

‘Don’t Waste Your Ancestors’ Time’ creates a new blend of Afro- and Afro-Brazilian grooves, improv and dub, and boasts an array of collaborators that push the music in new directions - spoken word artist Khadijatou Doyneh (Heliocentrics); saxophonist Tony Kofi (Abdullah Ibrahim, Jazz Jamaica, Cymande etc), top pianist Sam Leak (Aquarium), Afrobeat maestro Dele Sosimi, who vocalises in a completely new context; progressive UK tenor player John Martin; Ruby Rushton’s Nick Walters on trumpet; Nigerian singer Biola Dosunmu (Estuary 17); Bellowhead and Dele’s horn arranger, trombonist Justin Thurgur, as well as a cameo from Tamar Collocutor. The album’s title paraphrases novelist Wole Soyinka in a plea to all not to throw away what their ancestors fought for - whether that’s through ignoring spiritual heritages, allowing ourselves to be divided and conquered, or turning a blind eye to contemporary injustices....

The Pro-Teens - MF TEEN: Your Concurrence In The Above Is Assumed

MF TEEN: Your Concurrence In The Above Is Assumed recognises the legacy of rap’s Illest Villain, traversing MF DOOM’s discography and personas, flipping selections from Madvillain, MM.. FOOD, Viktor Vaughan, Danger Doom and more, taking care to ensure recognisable tunes such as Doomsday and Curls are represented alongside more obscure cuts such as The Gas Face, the Third Bass song that featured the first recorded verse from MF DOOM in his original moniker of Zev Love X of the ill-fated 90s NYC rap group KMD.

Helmed by Hudson Whitlock, prolific drummer and percussionist of Karate Boogaloo and Surprise Chef, Melbourne’s The Pro-Teens is a collective of instrumentalists making weirdo instrumental soul records. Drawing from the community of musicians from bands in the College Of Knowledge orbit, The Pro-Teens’ incorporate the comic book stylings of DOOM and Kool Keith, the dark flavors of Gravediggaz and Wu-Tang Clan, and the cinematic composition of Galt MacDermot, culminating in an unorthodox patchwork of cinematic soul, boom-bap funk breaks and left-field instrumental textures.

“The diversity of tones, moods, feels and arrangements was an intentional act to mirror the diversity within DOOM's own diverse musical vocabulary. We wanted to fluctuate between putting our own spin on DOOM's classic tunes as well as staying true to the original source.” - Bandleader Hudson Whitlock aka Libby Clique-Baité.

The full-length album follows the Pro-Teens now collectible 7”s of The Pro-Teens’ renditions of Peachfuzz b/w One Beer and Doomsday b/w Curls, releases that built a feverous anticipation for the complete album.

MF TEEN: Your Concurrence In The Above Is Assumed comes after 2021’s Snooch Dodd & The Pro-Teens - I Flip My Life Every Time I Fly, which gained BBC6 Music’s Album Of The Day honors after its co-release by College Of Knowledge and UK tastemaker label Mr Bongo.

The band was formed in celebration of Blue Note Records’ 85th Anniversary and embarked on an extensive U.S. tour earlier this year during which they honed a distinctive, progressive sound that is the perfect embodiment of the Blue Note ethos. “Blue Note has been such a wonderful home for the community, for incredible musicians, for creativity, for all these years,” says Clayton. “You can’t help but think about all those masters, all those heroes that you’ve grown up listening to.
