Nicholas Payton - DRIP

Nicholas Payton unveils a new album “Drip,” a new take on six previously recorded original compositions.

The idea for a sweet, slick reworking of the tracks came in 2021 when Payton found himself stuck in Atlanta after a show, his return to New Orleans stalled by Hurricane Ida. Making the most of his downtime and his location, Payton sought out a studio session with musicians who had the precision and soul to capture the energy of signature R&B classics pioneered there.

The result is a raw and soulful, but precise, execution of ideas, plied by masters of the format. Drummer and producer Lil’ John Roberts, a veteran of tours with artists including Janet Jackson and Stevie Wonder, adds a polished, lilting funk throughout the album that particularly buoys “Big George” and “Gold Dust Black Magic,” songs that have been mainstays of Payton’s live sets in recent years.

Robert Glasper, a long-time collaborator, guests on “The Backward Step” lending a deceptive ease to the airy meditation. Despite having a connection that dates back decades, the track is a landmark in their musical relationship.

“I was one of the first people to take him on the road,” Payton says. “I’m proud to see what he’s doing for Black culture. As much music as we’ve made over the years, I believe this is our first time on a record together.”

“Drip” culminates in the first-ever duet between legendary composers Patrice Rushen and Michael Franks, pioneers of the format which has been foundational to Payton’s musical journey. ‘Visible Light’ shimmers as the two quiet storm stalwarts beckon listeners into a groove that paves the way for the gleam of Payton’s flugelhorn.

Tracklist;
1. Big George
2. Black Is Beautiful
3. Gold Dust Black Magic
4. Kimathi
5. The Backward Step (feat. Robert Glasper & Christie Dasheill)
6. Visible Light (feat. Patrice Rushen & Michael Franks)

Terrace Martin & Alex Isley - I Left My Heart In Ladera

Weeks after releasing their sublime cover of Sade’s “Paradise,” Terrace Martin and Alex Isley have more collaborations and love letters to Los Angeles to share. The pair who are no strangers to working together have officially announced the forthcoming release of their joint album I Left My Heart In Ladera.

The project borrows its name from the Ladera Heights neighborhood, and the LA natives are seen posing in front of the infamous “Ladera White House” for the cover art. They haven’t shared any additional details such as the tracklist or guest musicians, but according to Terrace, “A few of LA’s finest are on this album,” which he hinted on Twitter. He also gave props to his lovely collaborator whom he previously called “the soothing voice of Los Angeles” upon the release of “Paradise.”

“I’m very proud and excited of this work of art,” Martin shared on Instagram. “Working with Alex has been a dream come true.”

I Left My Heart In Ladera is a dream realized for fans, too. Any opportunity to hear more Alex Isley is a major win. This release will be Isley’s second joint album, following last year’s gorgeous and glorious Marigold made with producer Jack Dine.

Nookie - Improvisions

Proudly presenting Nookie's debut album for Metalheadz – 'Improvisions'.

A collection of work which Nookie himself calls "the best tracks I've ever written", 'Improvisions' embraces the fact that we don't live in a perfect world. Throughout the project, aided in many parts by Ruth Royall, Nookie expresses his deep-rooted love for the music he's devoted so much of his life to, backed further by a total creative freedom.

As with much of Nookie's music, vocals are a crucial component. Ruth Royall's soul-stirring presence can be heard on six of the album's 13 tracks, including standouts like 'Missing You', 'Part Of Me' and the previously released 'Hero'. Given the vigour and liveliness that both artists exhibit, it is difficult to imagine that they first connected online. Ruth calls working with Nookie "a pleasure right from the start", adding that "the musicality shone through instantly and just sparked endless ideas".

As we head deeper into the album Nookie provides some signature dancefloor fillers in the way of 'Future Forever' and 'Over & Over', as well as lower tempo beats such as '92 Interlude' and 'Smoke Screen'. The assemblage of tracks come together impressively, further cementing Nookie's reputation as one of the most important artists of his kind.

Tracklist:

2. Hero (feat. Ruth Royall)
3. Part Of Me (feat. Ruth Royall)

7. We Shall Overcome (feat. Ruth Royall)

Lady Wray - Come On In (Les Imprimés Remix)

On January 28, 2022, Lady Wray released her Piece Of Me album. A deeply personal record that takes on the good and the bad in life from deception and abuse to the joys of motherhood and long awaited professional triumph. The accolades the album has received since its release speak volumes. From performing on The Stephen Colbert Show, to selling out multiple US tours, to cleaning up in the best of 2022 lists to crushing an NPR Tiny Desk on the 1 year anniversary of the album, Piece Of Me continues to prove itself a timeless classic.

In March of 2023, Lady Wray had Ghostface Killah join her on the “Piece Of Me” remix and had Pete Rock lend his legendary remixing skills to “Joy & Pain”. Now it’s a Big Crown family affair as Les Imprimés lends his production prowess to a remix for “Come On In” and Surprise Chef take the warm weather anthem “Under The Sun” and give it their unorthodox Jazz / Funk treatment. Both of these remixes put brand new energy on the originals and will hold us over while Lady Wray is finishing her new album with El Michels Affair due out in 2024.

Tracklist:
1. Lady Wray – Come On In (Les Imprimés Remix)
2. Lady Wray & Ghostface Killah – Piece Of Me (Remix)
3. Lady Wray – Joy & Pain (Pete Rock Remix)

Aquadeep & Veesoul - Matters Of Groove

Selville Records is stoked to present the first album from Aquadeep and Veesoul. Matters Of Groove has twelve tracks of super soulful melodies and sweet rhythms. It's a wide-screen vision of soulful electronic dance music.

The album has some really great collaborations. The duo worked with some amazingly talented creatives like their long-time collaborator MellowKeyz and Poetic Leester, and some new collaborators like Mondli, Charma Villain, Rudi'kastic, Msisis, Martin, and New York’s Desney Bailey. Bailey is a big deal in the European NuJazz, Neo Soul, and House scene.

According to the duo, "We didn't even know we were making an album until we got it all together. Everyone else is going deep tech, which is cool, but we wanted to keep making soulful electronic dance music. It shows that the South African house music scene is diverse. Matters Of Groove is perfect for the dancefloor or Sunday chillas."

This whole album is a personal touch from this amazing duo. The title is a reflection on the definition of groove (club culture) in South Africa, which is limited to deep house, afro house, and commercial music. With Matters Of Groove, they're bringing soulful music to the dancefloor.

Tensei - ReARTiculations

The Def Pressé label proudly announces 'ReARTiculations’ by Grammy winning duo Tensei; the latest in its Def Pressé Editions - KPM Crate Diggers series in which artists dig deep into the archives of the legendary KPM Sound Library.

London-based label, Def Pressé are very pleased to continue their partnership with legendary Library Music label KPM. Def Pressé and friends, including names like Damu the Fudgemunk, Stro Elliot (The Roots), J-Live, Blockhead, Deca, Chris Dave and many more TBA have been given exclusive access to the KPM Library. These projects will take shape as two types of record. Def Pressé Editions/KPM Crate Diggers are works built around samples from KPM releases amongst other Library Music catalogues. Def Pressé Editions/KPM Originals are brand new pieces of music, free from samples. Both of these series’ include some very special guest vocalists and musicians as well as the Producers/Arrangers themselves. All of this music will be released by Def Pressé and placed into the vaults at KPM Library Music.

Tensei (meaning "Heaven Star" in Japanese) is formed of Chris Kramer and Midas Wells. Hailing from the musical mecca of Chicago, the duo have a vast wealth of influences and history to inform their production including: hip hop, house, soul, jazz, library, and electronic music among others; as a result, they create eclectic compositions that fuse many disparate styles. Although steeped in the tradition of classic hip-hop production, Tensei does not rely on records for samples. They play and compose most musical parts themselves with both real and digital instruments.

‘ReARTiculations’ takes Tensei back to the start of their musical journey. When given the opportunity to rework some songs for the KPM Music Library, Tensei wanted to embrace their sample based musical foundation while expanding on original composition. The result is transformed songs that sound like entirely new compositions. Playing most of the parts themselves, Tensei enlisted a few friends to help articulate the new direction, often reworking MIDI recordings originally created by Tensei and sung to the musicians by Kramer.

The album includes ‘Midnight Ride’, which was inspired by old NFL film scores and other historical documentaries from the 60s-70s. A constantly changing piece, KPM was unable to recognize the sample upon the first submission of ‘Good Morning’, and world class pianist Greg Spero was enlisted on ‘Tranquility’ to create a work based on “What if FlyLo did a happy song?”.

Tensei has released several offerings over the years, including album ‘Constellate’, ‘Walk It Out’ with Georgia Anne Muldrow, producing and composing ‘I Luma’ by A. Billi Free as well as official remixes for artists including Bilal and Tokimonsta//Anderson. Paak. More recently, Tensei produced and composed on J Ivy’s double Grammy album ‘The Poet Who Sat By The Door’.

The Cinematic Orchestra - Man With A Movie Camera (20th Anniversary Edition)

The Cinematic Orchestra have announced a 20th anniversary tour & audio reissue of their seminal 2003 album “Man With A Movie Camera.” The live shows will feature songs from the album with all new visuals, celebrating the release across Europe. The 2LP limited edition comes in ashen and pewter grey coloured vinyl, housed in a rigid tip-on foiled, embossed and debossed detail gatefolded sleeve with updated artwork and new liner notes. This reissue will include 12” double sided art card insert of unseen session photography from the time.

As part of the film festival celebrations of Porto being the European City of Culture in 2001, Jason Swinscoe of The Cinematic Orchestra was commissioned to score a soundtrack to a silent movie as a one-off performance. The film was Dziga Vertov's ‘Man With A Movie Camera,’ a 1929 early documentary cinema film from the Soviet Union, and hailed by many including The British Film Institute to be one of the greatest films of all time, nearly 100 years on from its creation. The performance took place in the historic Coliseu Porto, and ended with a standing ovation of 3,500 people. The Cinematic Orchestra have since toured the show internationally over the years, including performances at The Barbican in London, NYC’s Winter Garden at WTC, and Sydney Opera House.

The band was in the process of writing “Every Day” when the film commission occurred, which had a formative influence on “Man With A Movie Camera”. Certain tracks that made it onto “Every Day” in other forms were written specifically for the score or were already in development, which allowed Swinscoe and the band to remold motifs to the film's unfolding narrative. The title 'Every Day' was based on the narrative in the film, which portrays a day in the life of an idealised Soviet society, beginning with people waking up, moving through various workplace environments, and into leisure time & activities.

“Man With A Movie Camera” was eventually recorded and released in 2003. it was met with much acclaim. The Guardian gave it 4/5 and said “You can perform an autopsy on the jazz instruments, DJ Shadow-like grooves and repeating chord sequences, yet come away scratching your head as to how, in such simple combinations, they make such heartfelt music.” The Independent on Sunday continued, “It stands alone, proud and complete.” And dance magazines also showered it with praise such as DJ Magazine, “The genius, a word not to be used lightly, of The Cinematic Orchestra seemingly knows no bounds.”

Since debuting with “Motion”, in 1999, The Cinematic Orchestra have sold hundreds of thousands of albums, generated over a billion streams and enjoyed critical support from the likes of Pitchfork, The Guardian, New York Times, Le Monde, Resident Advisor, Fader, Crack, Rolling Stone, Gilles Peterson, Benji B, Jason Bentley and Mary Anne Hobbs. In 2007, The “Ma Fleur” album was recognised for its bold departure from the group’s sonic traditions; in the years since, it’s been continuously celebrated, with tracks like ‘To Build A Home’ reaching huge audiences. The band have performed to larger and larger audiences and sold out the likes of London's Royal Albert Hall, Philharmonie de Paris, Rome’s Auditorium Park Della and the Sydney Opera House. Coachella, Glastonbury, Fuji Rock, Montreux and Sonar have all played host to the band’s much loved live performances. They have also appeared at the Directors Guild Lifetime Achievement Awards for Stanley Kubrick and New York’s Summerstage with the legendary Mahavishnu Orchestra with John McLaughlin. Their original score for “The Crimson Wing”, included the track ‘Arrival of the Birds’ which featured in the Oscar Winning Stephen Hawking biopic "The Theory of Everything”. Their last album “To Believe,” charted in the Top 20 of the UK albums chart and #1 in the album vinyl chart.

Tomorrow Comes The Harvest - Evolution

Tomorrow Comes The Harvest is the accumulative efforts of talented musicians and their visions about what makes the art form of music so special. A theory initiated and put into action by late Afro Beat creator and Nigerian Drummer Tony Allen and Detroit Techno Pioneer Jeff Mills. Each belonging to a long tradition of using music to reach higher levels of consciousness, along with veteran keyboardist Jean-Phi Dary, the three toured internationally until the untimely death of Tony Allen in 2020. However, the foundation of the concept was cemented and ready for continuation. Mills reconfigures the concept to function as trio once again and invites Tabla virtuoso Prabhu Edouard to join the concept.

Tomorrow Comes The Harvest is about exploring the unknown, transcending by the way of intersecting sounds and rhythm through an array of improvisational movements.

Background: Tomorrow Comes The Harvest project started with late Tony Allen, one of the originators of AfroBeat and Jeff Mills to get together to create an improvisational type of performance. The idea was to not pre-prepare or to preplan anything, but just to play in the moment spontaneously and to reach for the same understanding musically. Jean-Phi Dary had been worked with Tony Allen for a long time, naturally joined the unit. After an untimely passing of Tony in 2020, they thought that maybe a good idea to continue with the project and to consider it in a much more broader respect other than just three main musicians that may be, it’s interesting to make it open, to be able to invite other musicians in for certain concerts. They decided to invite Prabhu Edouard, who already had an experience of working with Jeff for classical concerts in France.

The album was recorded live at Bozar in Brussels, Belgium in 2022.

Dan Hastie & Terin Ector - MILS005: Crows Height

The Madlib Invazion Music Library Series was created by Madlib and Egon over the course of the Pandemic, and was a chance to give their creative friends the ability to stretch out and indulge in whatever type of music they wanted for release on the label.

The music had to be great and able to be presented as a stand alone album – like the best “Music Library” releases of the past, on labels like Italy’s Sermi, Germany’s Bruton, France’s MP2000 and the UK’s DeWolfe. And, like those albums, it had to work as easy, one-stop clearance for background cues in film and television production and, as producers have been indulging since the 1990s, for sampling.

The series contains 12 releases by DJ Muggs, Karriem Riggins, J-Zone, the Heliocentrics’ Malcolm Catto and Jake Ferguson, JJ Whitefield of Karl Hector/Whitefield Brothers/Poets of Rhythm, Motif Alumni and Music Research Library, Mario Luciano of Polyphonic Music Library, Henkel, Gabriel Rowland of Los Yesterdays, Dan Hastie and Terin Ector of Orgone, Dan Ubick and Joe Harrison

The albums will be released on the Madlib Invazion Bandcamp on the first Friday of each month over the course of one year. Listen, ponder, repeat.

VA - Spiritual Jazz 14: PRIVATE

“Private Press: A custom-made record that is produced and released by the artists themselves, or their close associates. Not to be confused with indie labels who are in the business of releasing other people's music.”

While the string of legendary independent labels, from Blue Note and Prestige to Steeplechase and Impulse! loom large in our ¬Spiritual Jazz catalogue, our latest instalment concerns the brave and innovative souls who acted ‘privately’, recording and releasing their music without the aid or involvement of a bona fide record company. Making a custom, private press record on your own, without the backing, status and business acumen of an established record company to help out is no mean feat, but it never really was difficult - it’s just a matter of spending money. And there has never been a shortage of studios & pressing plants willing to take your money! Easy done if you have funding in place of course, but the tricky bit, which remains to this day, is what to do exactly with a pallet load of vinyl that’s just been delivered to your door?

Herein you will find a variety of tracks from a selection of privately pressed jazz records released in the US between 1964 and 1987. One of the most interesting things I’ve found while researching this album is the variety of reasons behind coming up with a self-released record. No two stories are the same; some were done purely out of altruism to further the musical direction of students, others were trying to make it big. But one solid truth remains that binds together each and every selection here – the artists didn’t just make their music for the fun of it, they believed in their art so much that they took whatever steps they had available to them at the time to get their music heard.

Tracklist:
1. Erni Clark - By the Grace of God, I Am
2. Elysian Spring - Lotus
3. Radam Schwartz - Middle Eastern Fantasy
4. Mary Lou Williams - Communion Song: The World

VA - With Love Vol 2 (Compiled by Miche)

Compiling the follow-up to a very successful first album is always a tricky task, but just 12 months since the release of volume one in the 'With Love' series, miche has excelled himself once again with another glorious, deep dive into the world of rare soul. 15 tracks of independently released music, created by magnificent artists with stories to tell and primed for rediscovery.

The ambition to celebrate under-the-radar artists has remained, but instead of a facsimile of volume one, what we have here is a selection shaped by life changes. Volume two is for the dancers; still soulful, still ultra-rare and slept-on records from the USA, Chile, Brazil and beyond, but the dynamics of the collection have shifted slightly. It represents a move from being immersed in a week in week out environment of beautiful, soulful music in a cosy, dimly lit hi-fi bar to playing livelier, more energetic, dancefloor-focused music in nightclubs. This volume will get you on your feet, make you move and unleash whatever it is that makes you get down.

One of the jewels in the crown of this compilation is a joyous, anthemic gospel version of Stevie Wonder's 'As' by The Family Tree (a project produced by the fantastic Julius Brockington). We are also treated to a rare and sought-after Pennsylvanian funk / AOR bomb by Maxwell, a stunning modern soul tune 'High On You' by Freedom, and self-released Brazilian 45s by Banda 22 and Zé Da Lata. P.J. City's 'Straight Forward (Non-Stop)' is gospel-disco perfection, and we also have 'Dame Solamente Amor’, a sublime, soul beauty from Chile by Rogers Mitchell. Many of these artists featured in this compilation aren't household names, but they deserve their moment to shine, to be heard, loved and appreciated for their artistry.

As miche says it, “I hope this compilation helps in some way to keep this glorious music alive and play a part in connecting generations of music lovers from the worldwide soul family. As always, it has been made ‘With Love’.”

Greg Foat travels to Finland, teaming up once again with the Jazzaggression label to unveil “Feathers.” Building on the success of “Gone to the Cats,” the collaborative trio date with Aleksi Heinola and Teemu Åkerblom, “Feathers” follows a similar formula while expanding its musical horizons. “Feathers” introduces an even larger cast of Finnish musicians, including the notable inclusion of Finnish saxophone legend Eero Koivistoinen on tenor sax and the talented Ilmari Heikinheimo on percussion. Recorded over a stormy long weekend in mid-October 2022 at Jazzaggression’s in-house Studio Pelto, the album strikes a balance between precomposed tracks and spontaneously created pieces.

Devotees of Greg’s earlier releases are in for a treat, as “Feathers” skillfully merges his signature atmospheric touch with an expanded synthesis of sounds. Imagine the legendary Eero Koivistoinen infusing his prowess into the monumental jam “Riding the Breeze,” while tracks like “Feathers” and the contemplative “A Prayer for Love” showcase a downtempo elegance that lingers in the air.

Yet, “Feathers” doesn’t stop there—it delivers captivating jazz classics as well. Experience “The Sandpiper,” a bluesy minor jam reminiscent of the golden era of CTI Albums, or delve into the engaging rhythms of “Inconsequential Narrative” and the thematic intrigue of “As the Crow Flies.” A particularly enchanting aura envelops “When All Is Said and Done.” Its ephemeral minimalistic essence captures a spontaneous late-night allure, compelling the engineer to “Keep the tape rolling…”—the kind of magic that can only be conjured in the moment.

With “Feathers,” Greg Foat brings his animalistic trilogy of albums on Jazzaggression to a triumphant close, possibly delivering his most exceptional recording yet.
