Aaron Shaw - And So It Is

By no means a secret, (and in steady demand,) but certainly in the category of IYKYK, multi-instrumentalist Aaron Shaw is one of Los Angeles’s brightest young Composers, Producers, Arrangers, Band Leaders, and Music Directors. In his Home Studio that he shares with his older Brother, Lawrence (together making up the group Black Nile), Shaw can be found playing Saxophones, Clarinets, Flutes, Keyboards, Drum Machines, and also Engineering Sessions. A frequent fixture at The World Stage in Leimert Park, Shaw has collaborated with everyone from Pan Afrikan Peoples Arkestra, Phil Ranelin, Herbie Hancock, and Miguel Atwood-Ferguson, to Mary J. Blige, Dave Chapelle, Tyler, The Creator, Anderson .Paak, Nightmares on Wax and many more less well known OG, established, emerging, and underground Artists in the LA Jazz, Hip-Hop, Rap, Electronic, and Experimental Music scenes. Born and raised in Ladera Heights, he cut his teeth at the Fernando Pullum Community Arts Center and the LA County High School for the Arts (LACHSA) before eventually entering the tutelage of Kamasi Washington, who he is featured with in tandem Musical conversation on the entirety of the 2025 release Saul Williams meets Carlos Niño & Friends at TreePeople. After years of study, dedication, and gig-work, the path to his first full-length release proved to be a perilous one. And So It Is, out February 13th on Leaving Records, documents the physical, musical, and spiritual transformation thrust upon an already extraordinary talent.

In 2023, at age 27, and after months of troubling symptoms and medical dead-ends, Shaw was diagnosed with bone marrow failure—a state of affairs he succinctly describes as “grim.” To say nothing of the alienation, exhaustion, and fear that accompanies such a diagnosis—the endless testing and treatment protocols—Shaw’s very capacity to play music, the craft to which he had consciously dedicated his life since the sixth grade, was suddenly, radically altered. The key matter was Shaw’s red blood cell count, and his incapacity to produce sufficient oxygen. Breath, the activating force of the wind instrument, was now in short supply. A once-normal gig became a medical gamble. How many stairs to the stage? Could he play in Idyllwild’s higher altitude?

The subsequent process of acceptance was fraught and non-linear (as major health journeys tend to be), characterized by periods of emotional exhaustion (crying spells, social isolation), as well as brave attempts to troubleshoot his limitations (experimenting with new mouthpieces and reeds, changing his posture). Initially frustrated by the resultant changes to his sound, Shaw pushed through. Playing music was still his primary source of solace. Through this self-therapy, and within the constraints of a new playing style, songs began to coalesce. “And So It Is,” a saying Shaw traces back to a childhood immersed in church music, became the mantra for this creative period, and eventually the collection’s title.

Under the nurturing eye of Leaving Record’s affiliate Carlos Niño (percussionist and, notably, the Producer for Andre 3000’s New Blue Sun) And So It Is slowly took shape—An eight song cycle that plums the depths of despair and isolation, as well as the strange clarity that comes from confronting one’s mortality. The aptly-titled first track, “Soul Journey” orients the listener. An initially off-kilter, ruminative, almost rainswept movement gives way to a more focused and propulsive mid-section (one senses grit here, a desire for forward momentum), before gradually laying down to a bed of cello and harp. And So It Is retains an inward focus throughout, and there are moments of transcendence, when the individual concerns plaguing Shaw seem to give way to pure delight in the discovery and expression of musical forms.

Shaw carefully selected his collaborators for this project, numerous and talented, including Lawrence Shaw and elder statesman Dwight Trible, among others. That track three, “Windows to the Soul,” is an interpretation of a Chick Corea composition, and that track eight, “Never Catch Me Out Of Alignment,” is sort of a cover of a Kendrick and Flylo collab, will intrigue and entertain old and new heads alike. And So It Is is a lovingly produced collaborative document of an artist at a crossroads who has chosen to proceed. Was it ever really a choice, even? While the future remains forever uncertain, for all of us, there is an infinite well-spring of hope and freedom and joy in doing what we do, and doing it well.

Alix Perez - Sabotage

Alix Perez returns with a polished drop of weighty bass textures and intricate percussion, making 'Sabotage' a standout statement for 1985 Music, and the sound as a whole. Featuring 8 studied originals, we begin with both the old school percussive-led stepper textures of 'Cape Reinga' and more LFO-driven bumps of 'Mother Cell', before two high profile collaborations emerge, firstly Cesco on the broken-beat grooves of 'Watch This' and SP:MC on the slamming bass growls of 'Skunkworks'. From here, 'Enter' drops a sonic boom of subby goodness with scuttling synth patterns to boot, with HIJINX then supplying some big room devilry of 'Evil Twin' close behind. Next, Alix pushes out distorted drum madness of 'Rush Them', with Trim arriving for a crunchy finale on the highly explosive 'Kal-El'. Awesome stuff.

Brian Jackson & Masters At Work - EP Two

The second digital and vinyl EP from Brian Jackson and Masters At Work’s highly anticipated ‘Now More Than Ever’ project is a masterclass in soulful innovation, musical legacy, and collaborative excellence. Carefully curated and expertly packaged for true fans, this release brings together extended versions and rare cuts that were simply too expansive, deep, and powerful to fit on the forthcoming triple LP, but far too important not to be heard.

This Double Pack also includes the title track off the forthcoming album “Now More Than Ever”, a brand-new, never-before-heard track birthed organically during the energy and creative momentum of the recording of the album. It stands as a testament to the spontaneous brilliance of Jackson, MAW and their collaborators, capturing a moment of pure musical inspiration.

The EP features seven tracks, including reimagined and extended versions of classics such as Moonshine, Lady Day and John Coltrane, and Home Is Where the Hatred Is, plus a deep focus on Racetrack in France — first recorded by Brian Jackson and Gil Scott-Heron in 1977 for their landmark Bridges album.

Highlights include:

The MAW (Masters at Work) Live Mix of Moonshine, featuring former Midnight Band/Amnesia Express multi-instrumentalist Carl Cornwell on saxophone.

A sprawling 12" version of Home Is Where the Hatred Is — a jazz-fuelled dancefloor reinterpretation blending political fire with sonic elegance.

The 12” version of Lady Day and John Coltrane, featuring Rahsaan Patterson’s soulful vocal performance set against a lush, cinematic arrangement.

A masterful reworking of Racetrack in France featuring legends Josh Milan, J. Ivy, and Moodymann, each bringing their distinct voice and flavour to this seminal piece. The Instrumental version is also included in this 2 x 12” EP.

Whether you're a long-time devotee of Brian Jackson and Gil Scott-Heron’s influential catalogue, a DJ or collector chasing rare wax, or a new listener drawn to future-leaning soul and jazz, Now More Than Ever EP 2 is an essential release — a bridge between the past, present, and the music still to come.

Flying Lotus - Big Mama

Flying Lotus fans rejoice, today the famed electronic auteur announces BIG MAMA, a brand new EP coming out on 6th of March.

For two decades now, Los Angeles’ Steve Ellison, better known as Flying Lotus and Captain Murphy, has helped form and influence the shape of 21st century music. Growing up in LA, Ellison was immersed in a rich environment of artistic inspiration - with musical legends, Marilyn McLeod and Alice Coltrane in his family, and his interests spanned everything from beat-making to anime. By the late 2000s, his ability to incorporate jazz, hip-hop, and nebulous, futuristic elements had established him within LA’s famed Low End Theory and beyond. His albums on Warp Records feature names like David Lynch and Erykah Badu, and he’s produced on seminal records including Kendrick Lamar’s To Pimp A Butterfly.

BIG MAMA captures Ellison in a moment of spontaneous, unbridled momentum. Densely packed with disparate sounds, rhythms, and effects, the EP delivers what he describes as “experimental, maximalist, hyperfast, electronic burst of energy”, packing seven dynamic tracks into a single continuous composition in which every bar is unique, containing no loops throughout.

“I wanted it to feel like being shot out of a cannon, just explosive, unpredictable energy,” he explains. “Like a fuckin’ computer gone awry. Like a machine that had just lost its mind.”

GENA - The Pleasure Is Yours

There is a kinetic energy that binds drummer and producer Karriem Riggins and singer-songwriter, rapper, and producer Liv.e, the spark that happens when instinct meets flow and spirit finds rhythm. Their collaborative debut as GENA (short for “God Energy, Naturally Amazing,” and loosely inspired by Gina from Martin), The Pleasure Is Yours, feels like a playful, soulful conversation between two kindred improvisers: Liv.e’s smoky, unpolished vocals glide through Riggins’ warm, percussive universe. Rooted in jazz, soul, and hip-hop as living language, the Dallas born Liv.e brings a raw, experimental approach to R&B, while Detroit native Riggins, known for his work with Common, Erykah Badu, The Roots, Madlib, and a close kinship with the late J Dilla.

For both artists, GENA marks a natural evolution. Riggins whose rhythmic fingerprint has shaped the work of hip-hop and neo-soul legends continues his lifelong dialogue between jazz improvisation and beat science. Liv.e, following her acclaimed projects Couldn’t Wait to Tell You… and Girl in the Half Pearl, finds an exalted freedom in this space: her voice sounds like water, changing shape to fit the emotional container of each track on The Pleasure is Yours.

Together they create a world that’s analog and ethereal, percussive and poetic, sonically bridging eras without ever settling in one. There are echoes of Dilla’s unquantized drums, the spiritual spaciousness of Sun Ra and Alice Coltrane, and the sensuality of neo soul’s golden years but this is not a throwback record. There is a subtle confidence in the record’s looseness and refusal to be pinned down.

Isaac Carter - Last Call

Have Isaac Carter & Callum Asa made the most tasteful tech house EP of recent memory? The short answer is yes….

Isaac and Callum, known for their respective club nights: OCHI and Planet People have been quietly chipping away at the coalface of underground dance music for quite some time now.

Isaac - perhaps known more widely as a regular at Circoloco & Phonox has shared bills with the likes of Moodyman, DJ Bone, Kai Alce, Laurent Garnier and Marcellus Pittmann whilst being championed by Joy Orbisson, Ben UFO, Moxie, Seth Troxler, Raresh and Floating Points to name but a few. With such an impressive CV and wide ranging support, it’s wild to note that the first EP released on his own label, OCHI only came out in 2023. His star is clearly ascending with rapidity - so when we throw long term collaborator Callum Asa into the mix, things start to get really interesting.

Calum has been running Planet People for the last couple of years, welcoming incredible names such as Shed, Surgeon, Willow, Ploy, Cooly G, Rroxymore and so many more. Steel sharpens steel and having been surrounded by such esteemed talent, it’s clearly rubbed off on the pair who present 4 polished, meticulously constructed, club ready masterpieces, each with their own distinct feel and an insatiable groove.

‘Feel Me’ sets the scene with a descending baseline that would eek a wiggle out of the most reluctant spectator. The twisted dub eeks out even more groove, locking in a more sinister bounce for the heads. By The time ‘Understand’ get’s into full swing, we’re already under the spell of Carter & Asa, this is the kind of roller that could go on forever and ever. The synth embellishments and washes of analog synth pull us deeper and deeper in, prepping us for the finale , ’Try You’ which simmers with deep, brooding intensity.
The magic of the duo’s appeal is that this EP will find its way into the bags of the deepest diggers and also appeal to a new generation of house fans. Elements of it are accessible , but in the right hands - the EP will open a portal to new worlds.

Tracklist:
1. Feel Me
2. Feel Me (Twisted Dub)
3. Understand
4. Try You

Jill Scott - To Whom This May Concern

Philly singer Jill Scott returns to long-form LP format after over a decade away with To Whom This May Concern, her sixth album and first since Woman in 2015. Scott's is a patient craft, echoing the take of creator as divine human vessel: "I wait to be inspired... until the words are dripping out of my mouth." A modern update of classic talent, it folds neo-soul and r&b into a modern studio palette shaped by producers Andre Harris, Adam Blackstone, Om'Mas Keith, DJ Premier and Trombone Shorty, with guest verses from Ab-Soul, JID, Tierra Whack and Too Short. 'Beautiful People' and 'Pressha' set the tone over haunting electronic jazz and ruefully acceptant themes, a faint downtown drama underlying the tone.

Kokoroko - From Metropolis Studios

The London-based afrobeat jazz septet delivers their signature grooves and wide-ranging influences- from 80s Brit-funk and R&B to West African disco- captured live straight to vinyl in their Jack Daniel’s Revive Live session.

The first single, ‘Express Your Love’, is out now on digital. The Bandcamp digital edition features three tracks, including ‘Higher’ from Get The Message and ‘Idea 5’ from their second album. The full four-track EP will be available on vinyl for Record Store Day (RSD), expanding the release with an additional live cut- offering a raw, one-take glimpse into the band’s evolving artistry.

“Cutting live-to-vinyl is kind of like stamping time, you’re capturing this moment that’s not going to happen the same way again. We love vinyl, so it just felt right; doing it in the spirit of some of our favourite records. We’d never played some of these songs like this before, it felt like the perfect way to capture them. We also covered Sweet and Innocent’s ‘Express Your Love’ (such a gorgeous track) and it’s the first time recording Noushy on lead vocals with us. She sounds amazing, and we really wanted to give her that shine.” - Kokoroko

Mark De Clive Lowe - Dreamweavers II

Dreamweavers II sees Mark de Clive-Lowe reunited with Italian rhythm masters Andrea Lombardini and Tommaso Cappellato for the next chapter in their electro-acoustic trio journey.

Recorded at Sotto il Mare Recording Studios in Verona, Italy in summer 2024, the album builds on the cosmic, hypnotic language established on Dreamweavers (2020) while pushing deeper into groove-driven terrain, dancefloor jazz and textural improvisation. Across eight tracks, the trio explore the elastic space between jazz tradition, beat culture, and club-influenced momentum – without samples or looping – relying purely on live interaction, feel and shared intuition.

Opening with the Azymuth-inspired “Terra de Luz,” the album immediately signals its global outlook. “Kaze no Michi” follows with late-night Tokyo energy – dancefloor jazz that feels equally at home in jazz clubs or after-hours rooms. Two intentional reinterpretations bridge jazz and beat culture: J Dilla’s “Raise It Up” (from Slum Village – Fantastic Vol. 2) is reimagined with its original groove and bass line as the launch pad, while “The Bass That Don’t Stop” becomes a lush house-jazz tribute to the late Phil Asher, originally co-created by Asher and de Clive-Lowe in 2002 under the moniker musiclovelife.

Bassist Andrea Lombardini’s “Pam” brings the album inward – introspective, spacious, and deeply melodic; while “Lucid Dreams” draws on the trio’s shared love of jungle, drum’n’bass and the exploratory spirit of greats like Chick Corea, amplifying the journey with forward motion and harmonic curiosity.

Dreamweavers II is a concisely intentional sound narrative: a trio record rooted in jazz lineage, shaped by beat culture and guided by a collective curiosity for texture, rhythm, and movement.

Michelle David & The True-Tones - Soul Woman

Renowned US-Dutch gospel-soul powerhouse Michelle David & The True-tones mark a bold new chapter with their forthcoming album, “Soul Woman”, out February 27, 2026 on Milan-based imprint Record Kicks. Building on the critical acclaim of 2024’s “Brothers & Sisters”, a record that held a mirror to the complexities of the world, the new LP “Soul Woman” turns inward — a deeply personal exploration of identity, healing, and spiritual resilience.

“How can I ask others to take time to reflect on their lives if I’m not doing the same myself?” Michelle David asks. That spirit of self-inquiry and renewal lies at the heart of “Soul Woman” — a record that embraces vulnerability while radiating strength.

Musically, “Soul Woman” continues to refine the band’s signature blend of gospel fire, soul and vintage rhythm & blues, while drawing from a wider palette of influences. Echoes of Curtis Mayfield, Bobby Womack, and The Four Seasons pulse through the grooves, while the gospel fire of The Blind Boys of Alabama and the joyous uplift of Diana Ross & The Supremes lend the album both gravity and sparkle. At the center is Michelle David’s unmistakable voice — raw, warm, and filled with purpose — wrapped in rich, analog-driven arrangements from longtime collaborators Paul Willemsen (guitar, bass guitar), Onno Smit (guitar, bass guitar) and Bas Bouma (drums). Together, Michelle David & The True-tones stand tall at the forefront of the retro soul scene — blending timeless grooves with modern urgency, unshakable authenticity, and heartfelt spirit.

A Voice Born in the Church, Honed on the Road. Born in New York and raised in the church, Michelle David began singing at just four years old and joined her first group, The Mission of Love, at five. Her powerhouse vocals took her around the globe, starring in acclaimed Broadway productions like Mama, The Sound of Motown, Glory of Gospel, and Mahalia, and recording with legends including Diana Ross and Michael Bolton — all before beginning her celebrated journey with The True-tones. Together, Michelle David & The True-tones have released seven critically acclaimed albums and lit up stages across Europe, from Pinkpop to North Sea Jazz and London Jazz Festival. Known for their electrifying live shows, the band has earned standing ovations from Spain to Scandinavia, appeared on major TV and radio platforms, and even performed at the 2022 Winter Olympics.

Their recorded work has been equally praised: The Gospel Sessions earned an Edison Award nomination (the Dutch equivalent of a Grammy), while 2020’s Truth & Soul was named Album of the Year by Craig Charles’ BBC Radio 6 Music and Album of the Month by FIP (Radio France). Their most recent album, Brothers & Sisters (2024), marked their debut on Record Kicks and became a breakout release — celebrated by Rolling Stone France, KEXP, Jazzthing Magazine (Germany), De Volkskrant (Netherlands), and BBC 6 Music.

A Testament to Soul’s Timeless Power With “Soul Woman”, Michelle David & The True-tones offer more than just a new record — it’s a musical testimony of resilience, a celebration of spiritual growth, and a reaffirmation of soul music’s ability to heal, connect, and inspire. At once rooted in classic traditions and blazing new trails, this is contemporary soul at its finest.

Shabaka - Of The Earth

‘Of the Earth’ was entirely written, produced, performed and mixed by Shabaka. It’s a deeply personal album which establishes Shabaka as a new form of instrumentalist/producer and shows the musical range that connects his dance based work from groups Sons of Kemet and The Comet Is Coming to the intricate textural sound world of his recent solo works (‘Perceive its Beauty, Acknowledge Its Grace’, ‘Afrikan Culture’) .

Beats and loops made on portable devices whilst on the road lay a foundation for choral flute melodies to soar within. Sequences of electronic rhythms outline a story of diasporic progression and words contextualise the record’s lyrical framework. Shabaka raps on the album - “I’ve never rapped before but was actually inspired by André 3000’s courage in exploring new dimensions with fearlessness and sincerity; I decided to find my voice on this album”.

A self imposed saxophone hiatus ended mid 2025 with a performance for South African drum maestro Louis Moholo’s memorial concert. This album marks Shabaka’s first recording made after a year and a half not playing the saxophone and a reckoning as to what his time on flutes primarily has shown him to be the future for his relationship with the instrument.

Shabaka says of an initial inspiration for the album - “D’angelo’s Brown Sugar was the first CD I bought and it sparked a lasting curiosity about the emotional possibilities allowed by the self produced and performed album. This record is my celebration of freedom in creative self expression. Before the pandemic I could only play the clarinet and saxophone and knew nothing about music production (or how to play the flute), so this has been a journey of learning and a reflection on the music that’s been created as a result.”

VA - The Aachen Jazz FIles - Compiled by Rainer Trüby & miche

The Aachen Jazz Files

A collection of essential jazz from the NABEL record label (1980-1994), compiled by miche & Rainer Truby.

The Aachen Jazz Files celebrates the pioneering spirit of NABEL Records—one of Germany’s most underrated yet influential independent jazz labels. Founded in 1980 by Rainer Wiedensohler, NABEL became a home for innovative musicians blending classic acoustic jazz with fusion, Brazilian rhythms, and avant-garde flourishes.

This compilation collects some of the label’s finest moments, including the soulful and Latin-tinged brilliance of Monika Linges Quartet (whose album *Floating* was reissued last year by PANORAMA Records for RSD Black Friday), the cosmic jazz explorations of John Thomas & Lifeforce, the deep jazz-funk grooves of Hipsters In The Zone, and the stunning, expressive vocals of Maria Joao’s quintet.

Nestled in the far west of Germany, near the Dutch and Belgian borders, Aachen has long been a hidden gem for jazz lovers. Its vibrant scene, fueled by music schools and the legendary Malteserkeller jazz club, cultivated a unique sound that resonated far beyond its city limits. In fact, the city didn’t just birth a jazz movement—it also lays claim to opening Germany’s first discotheque in 1959.

From London to Tokyo, NABEL’s releases became secret weapons for jazz DJs seeking deep, danceable cuts. The label’s trademark blend of acoustic jazz, fusion, and Brazilian influences made its way onto turntables in underground clubs and festival stages worldwide.

Expect elegant samba jazz, spiritual grooves, and modal masterpieces that capture the essence of NABEL’s golden years. Monika Linges’ contributions shine with her rich harmonies and heartfelt compositions, while John Thomas & Lifeforce deliver a perfect storm of fiery instrumentation and deep soul. Maria Joao’s early recordings showcase her extraordinary vocal range, and Hipsters In The Zone bring a forward-thinking, acid jazz-infused perspective to the NABEL sound.

As co-compiler Rainer Truby puts it:
'NABEL Records always had this special ‘Aachen sound’—a jazz flavor that carried its own energy, somewhere between the cool sophistication of fusion and the warmth of Brazilian music. It’s a pleasure to finally bring together some of these classics in one essential collection.'

Compiled by miche & Rainer Truby.

Yussef Dayes - LIVE FROM MT FUJI

Following the instant sell-out of "MT FUJI FM", a collector’s special edition vinyl experience Featuring Gilles Peterson, The Yussef Dayes Experience returns for LIVE FROM MT. FUJI on standard black vinyl, with music only.

The project includes live performances of both pre-released favorites and brand-new compositions, featuring the extraordinary Japanese vocalist / virtuoso Minami Kizuki from Amami Island, on vocals and Sanshin (a traditional three-stringed, long-necked instrument, unique to the region).

The collaboration was born in a moment of pure serendipity; the night before filming at Mount Fuji, Yussef expressed a desire to connect with a local Japanese musician, someone rooted in the islands’ sound and spirit. That led the band to Kizuki, whose ethereal musicianship brought an entirely new dimension to the music.

Yussef tells us; “she just came with her vibes, and we just tapped in. And it was literally that feeling of when you’re on edge and you’ve just got to be listening, you’ve got to be
in the zone, regardless of the circumstances. And, yeah. It was this beautiful moment, and she really blessed us with the vibes.”

LIVE FROM MT. FUJI is a sonic pilgrimage, a merging of cultures, rhythms, and stories, and stands as a testament to Yussef Dayes’ global musical vision.

Available on black vinyl only.

Terrance Martin - Purpose

Multi-instrumentalist and producer Terrace Martin has released PURPOSE, the third installment in his four-album series, on March 6, 2026 via Sounds of Crenshaw in partnership with EMPIRE.

The four albums — titled after the concept "Love is Louder Than Algorithms" — form a cohesive sonic narrative exploring different frequencies and emotional dimensions.
