Philly singer Jill Scott returns to
long-form LP format after over a decade away with To Whom This May
Concern, her sixth album and first since Woman in 2015. Scott's is a
patient craft, echoing the take of creator as divine human vessel: "I
wait to be inspired... until the words are dripping out of my mouth." A
modern update of classic talent, it folds neo-soul and r&b into a
modern studio palette shaped by producers Andre Harris, Adam Blackstone,
Om'Mas Keith, DJ Premier and Trombone Shorty, with guest verses from
Ab-Soul, JID, Tierra Whack and Too Short. 'Beautiful People' and
'Pressha' set the tone over haunting electronic jazz and ruefully
acceptant themes, a faint downtown drama underlying the tone.
