REFLEX is a series by BIMHUIS Productions, in which musicians are invited to reflect on the pulse of our times through composition, curation and performance. The projects are recorded live from our stage. In September 2025, we invited drummer Jamie Peet into the rehearsal space of our venue.

In the last decade, Jamie Peet has proven himself as a jazz drummer for a new generation, seamlessly blending jazz with hip-hop, classical music, and electronic influences. He has established himself as a prominent voice in both the Dutch and European music scenes.

For the occasion he has formed a band with saxophonist Ben van Gelder, bassist Pat Cleaver and renowned vibraphonist Joel Ross. 'I believe in symbiosis', writes Jamie to us when asked about his band. 'In how differences can support, challenge, and strengthen each other. When individual voices truly listen to one another, space is created for something new. I think that is precisely where the strength of this formation lies.’

For Daily New Beginning, Jamie Peet departs from the concept of shoshin, which stands for the ‘beginner’s mind’. According to this philosophy from Zen Buddhism you approach each situation with a humble, open attitude, whatever your level or experience.

Jeff Mills - The Trip To Vega

The Trip To Vega is about deep outer space odyssey that occurs in the process of traveling from Earth through the Cosmos to another “favorable” star system 25.3 light-years away.

The time is year 2097, Sept 23rd.

To this day, Earthlings have managed to dodge some of nature’s more dangerous extremities, massive volcanic eruptions, Earthquakes, solar burst that knocked out the Planet’s entire electrical grid for 3 years, numerous plagues of disease, food and fresh water shortages, domestic and International Wars and many other life-changing operas, but for this event, what remains is a realization that has no remedy. The cause: Earth’s physicality has changed. It is no longer favorable for living things.

It is the constant shifting of the planet’s internal tectonic plates which has unfortunately produced an unexpected and impassable dilemma.

Because of the collisions, deep within the planet’s core, the planet is now producing an extraordinary amount of sound that includes a specific harmonic frequency that erodes the natural senses of all life on Earth.

It is intensifying. It is intolerable and it is unlivable.

Yet, some humans prefer to stay, to “ride it out” like the Titanic captain going down with his ship. Some, in total disbelief as some have concluded it is the second coming of Jesus Christ. But for most, the decision is clear. To live another day, leaving is the only rational choice.

At an increasing rate, scientific research data shows that humans and most animals, excluding the Jellyfish will eventually lose the usage of hearing and are to greatly suffer from an array of other neurological and psychological effects. The sense of touch and taste, sleep depreciation, severe nerve damage, constant hallucinations. Everyone will lose many of their cognitive abilities within an estimated 12 months from now.

On this day and every 7 days afterwards until all registered passengers have departed, the first of a fleet of large number of massive size spacecraft carrying approximately 1 million humans per vessel will permanently leave Earth to begin the long and adventurous trek across outer space to a new home: Vega.

This is not a precautionary tale as there is nothing to learn. Instead, a decision has been made and a Trip To Vega is the consequence.

Karl Hector & The Malcouns - Yolek

Is this Khruangbin? Nope, but if you like them, you’ll dig this. Kraut-Funk – that’s our preferred term.

The Karl Hector adventure continues with their fourth studio album.

'Yolek' digs deeper into the Krautrock history embedded deep in the soil of their native Munch – three of the most influential bands of the 1970s experimental German rock scene sprung from there: Amon Düül, Popol Vuh and Embryo. Drawing from those bands’ homebound and worldly influences, JJ Whitefield and Zdenko Curulija conceived and produced this kosmiche-werk.

Influenced by these musical heroes, and following the path of 'Non Ex Orbis,' Whitefield and Curulija shape a sound that takes the experimental approach of the classic Krautrock era and slides between beat-heavy drone and spacey, prog-rock suites.

'Yolek' symbolizes an innocent way of composing and improvising music, free from the influences of our contemporary environment, preserving a childlike way of hearing sounds in their unfiltered purity.

“Some will classify this as a retro, but for the band it simply is a form of creating, Whitefield states. “We’re drawing from an established musical vocabulary which was popular at a time in Germany, when underground musical culture had its creative peak.”

Los Orientales de Paramonga - Los Orientales de Paramonga 1972-1976 (Analog Africa No.45)

In the late 1960s, the coastal city of Paramonga, just a three-hour drive north of Lima, gave rise to a vibrant music scene shaped by surf, rockabilly, and tropical sounds. Among its protagonists were two musicians, Víctor Ramírez and Maximiliano Chávez, who, with their psychedelic guitars, Fender amplifiers, and wah-wah pedals, would define not only their own sound but also shape the musical identity of the region.

Under the mentorship of their manager, Néstor “Romanito” Robles, the two guitarists added a few remarkable percussionists to the lineup and formed Los Orientales. Their debut single, "Lobos Al Escape,” recorded in 1970, reached the very top of the Peruvian charts, catapulting the band to national fame and spreading their electrifying cumbia throughout the country. Despite this early success, internal tensions led to a split between Víctor and Maximiliano, resulting in two rival groups with the exact same name.

Seeking wider recognition, Los Orientales de Paramonga of Víctor Ramírez - the band featured in this project — traveled to Lima and signed with Sono Radio, the country’s leading label. Under the direction of Argentine producer Enrique Lynch, they recorded a series of successful singles before releasing their debut album, "Con Sabor Tropical," in 1972. Blending cumbia with guaracha, salsa, and guaguancó, the band gained national acclaim and expanded their audience through relentless touring.

Their follow-up album "Tremendo Ritmo" from 1973 further cemented their reputation, incorporating vocal arrangements and aiming to rival top tropical acts of the era. Known for their electrifying live performances — often playing multiple venues in a single night — they eventually won over audiences in the capital after dominating northern Peru.

By the mid-1970s, after several releases including “Ritmo Para Ti”, Ramírez concluded his chapter with Sono Radio and continued evolving musically, later embracing emerging styles such as chicha and experimenting across genres. His former counterpart, Maximiliano Chávez, withdrew from professional music altogether.

Today, Víctor Ramírez lives in Genoa, Italy, leaving behind a legacy as one of Peru’s most innovative and versatile musicians — an artist who helped shape modern cumbia while never forgetting his roots.

The seven songs on Side A of this compilation are from the LP “Con Sabor Tropical”, and the six songs on Side B are from the LP “Tremendo Ritmo”, while Sides C and D are compilations drawn from their 45 RPM singles. Together, these recordings offer a complete journey through the sound and spirit of Los Orientales de Paramonga at their peak.

Yasiin Bey - The Ecstatic (Deluxe)

Yasiin Bey, the artistic mastermind formerly known as Mos Def, has announced a reissue of his 2009 album, The Ecstatic, which returns to vinyl and all physical formats on August 14th. It is also now streaming exclusively via Qobuz.

This marks the first time that The Ecstatic will be widely available in more than 15 years. The deluxe edition comes pressed on 2xLP 180-gram black vinyl, which comes with a translucent red 7-inch single including the previously unreleased bonus tracks “The Size” and “The Tournament.” Pre-orders are ongoing.

The expanded release also comes with a 120-page hardcover book containing behind-the-scenes shots by official photographer Cognito, as well as lyric quotes and some of Bey’s handwritten notes from the era.

Originally released in June 2009, The Ecstatic stands as a defining artistic statement from Mos Def (now known as yasiin bey) — a richly textured return to form that reaffirmed his status as one of hip-hop's most adventurous and intellectually engaged voices. Arriving a decade after his celebrated debut Black on Both Sides, the album was widely regarded as his strongest work in years, earning near-universal praise for its lyrical breadth, eclectic production, and thematic ambition.

Musically, The Ecstatic weaves a global sonic tapestry shaped by an array of forward-thinking producers including Madlib, J Dilla, Oh No, Preservation, Mr. Flash, Chad Hugo (of The Neptunes), and Georgia Anne Muldrow. The resulting soundscape is both rooted in hip-hop tradition and unbound by genre, integrating elements of jazz, soul, West-Asian and North-African inflection, and experimental sample work. Tracks like "Supermagic" and "Twilite Speedball" establish a vibrant, restless energy that mirrors the album's expansive creative scope.

Lyrically, yasiin bey traverses personal, political, and philosophical terrain with characteristic incisiveness, confronting social inequality, Western imperialism, and questions of cultural identity with poetic urgency. Embracing risk and complexity rather than nostalgia, The Ecstatic remains a mature, deeply felt body of work whose ambition, depth, and enduring resonance have solidified its place as a standout entry in yasiin bey (FKA Mos Def)’s catalog and in modern hip-hop history.

Nicola Conte & Nico Lahs - Reloved (The Afro Club Mixes) (Nicola Conte & Nico Lahs Afro Club Mix)

The Reloved series – Four Flies Records’ ongoing project where today’s producers reimagine select gems from the golden age of Italian library music and soundtracks – welcomes a new chapter from the formidable pairing of Nicola Conte and Nico Lahs.

The tracks reworked in this vinyl EP all originate from the first half of the 1970s, a period when a fascination with African imagery and sounds was so pervasive among Italian composers that it became a prominent cultural and aesthetic trend. Applying their refined touch, Conte and Lahs have expanded the rhythmic and atmospheric potential of the original recordings without the need for invasive overwriting. Instead, they have emphasized the unique identity of each piece, adding a contemporary club energy that remains entirely respectful of the original spirit, structure, and essence.

The EP opens with Piero Umiliani’s “Nel Villaggio” (originally found on the 1975 library album Continente Nero), which Conte and Lahs have filtered through a hypnotic, sensual tribal-house lens. Side A continues with “Orgiastic Ritual”, a reimagining of Gianfranco Reverberi’s main theme for Black Magic Rites (Renato Polselli’s 1973 erotic-horror film), which elevates the original percussive groove, amplifying its ritualistic dimension and drawing the listener into a mesmeric sonic spiral.

On side B, “Oasi nella Giungla” – from Giuliano Sorgini’s Africa Oscura (recorded in 1974) – takes a more minimalist, electronic approach: the original material remains front and centre, enveloped in delays and subtle rhythmic touches. Closing the EP is Romolo Grano and Gianni Oddi’s “Kilimangiaro”, originally composed for the 1974 documentary Le Montagne della Luce; through the use of sampling and loops, Conte and Lahs transform it into an elegant afro-house cut, at once sleekly restrained and irresistibly magnetic.

This is undoubtedly the most club-oriented instalment of the Reloved series to date, propelling Italy’s library music heritage from the flickering screens and analogue airwaves of the past onto the dancefloors of the present.

Omar - Brighter The Days (The Remixes)

Impressive Collective and BBE Music present Brighter The Days - The Remixes, a new collection built around Omar's epic 9th studio album.

The past year has seen Omar on particularly strong form, including two sold-out US tours, standout appearances on NPR’s 'Tiny Desk' , BBC TV’s 'Later with Jools Holland' and Channel 4’s 'Sunday Brunch' , whilst his guest appearances with various social media stars including DJ AG Online and collaboration with Donae’O on the viral hit 'Nights Like This' resulting in a growing younger audience.

This collection draws together extraordinary reinterpretations from the Brighter The Days album, from a dream ticket of legendary and forward-thinking producers; namely Kenny Dope, Joe Claussell, DJ Spinna, Illa J and Super D & Maestro. Of Kenny Dope’s remix of “Lovey Dovey” (with Raheem DeVaughn and Eric Roberson), Omar says that “you can definitely see people locking and popping to that one!” , while he describes Joe Claussell’s two versions of “There’s Much Love In The World” as “simply epic” .

Alongside Illa J’s rework of “Love Is Like” featuring India.Arie and Super D & Maestro’s remix of “I’ve Been Waiting” , the collection is a landmark extension of Omar's magnum opus long player.

Ornithology - Chet Baker Flipped

Multi-instrumentalist and producer Shaan Chhadva, operating under various monikers, seamlessly blends hip-hop, psychedelic jazz, and indie rock in his work. Amassing over 250 million streams with minimal self-promotion, the musician achieved widespread viral popularity following live performances under his Ornithology project. The current stage of his career is tied to the Nettwerk label, which released his Chet Baker archival remix project Chet Baker Reimagined, and is set to issue a new album under his SCayos alias, recorded with producer Phil Ek in early 2026.

SML - Spontaneous Music Live (Live)

SML is a Los Angeles based quintet featuring Anna Butterss, Jeremiah Chiu, Josh Johnson, Booker Stardrum, and Gregory Uhlmann.

'Spontaneous Music Live' contains two side-length pieces of unedited improvisation, recorded live at Los Angeles venue Zebulon during SML's December 2025 three-night residency, just weeks after the release of the band's second album HOW YOU BEEN. It was recorded and mixed live to analog tape by Bryce Gonzales (the same engineer/wizard known for his gorgeous live captures/mixes of Jeff Parker's ETA IVtet).

Between HOW YOU BEEN and their 2024 debut SMALL MEDIUM LARGE (both of which were heavily edited, shaped and post-produced) the band has developed a reputation for records that are heavily fused, polished, and punchy. The medium is on full post-modern display on those LPs, and the band’s post-production knife can be responsible for much of the perspective — the tastiest morsels collected, arranged, and rearranged just so.

But the source material from both those albums were live recordings. Long-form, unwieldy, ebbing and flowing. On top of that, every performance the band has ever done has been fully improvised in that spirit. So in the sphere of live performance the band’s esteem has grown down a different path — one of linear, hypnotic, expansion. It’s a perceived split persona shared by some of SML’s most inspiring conceptual bedfellows: compare the extended madness of Can’s 'Live in Paris 1973' to the relative tight form of 'Future Days' from the same year; the speed-funk chaos of Miles Davis’ 'Dark Magus' to the heavily deconstructed 'On The Corner' or 'Big Fun'.

'Spontaneous Music Live' removes the curatorial perspective and pulls the curtain back on that search-pluck-reconstruct editing process. What we’re left with is the psychedelic realism of the band in situ, in their home town, collectively improvising, fully in-the-moment, mining for that moment of discovery. We hear, in macro, each nugget of sound which could be the basis for a future SML album track, spattered amongst the collective chaos-and-control like stars in the night sky.

VA - Mr Bongo Record Club Vol.8

Welcome to Volume 8 of the Mr Bongo Record Club series, our in-house curated compilations that give us a chance to share some of our favourite tracks, hard-fought finds, and unsung gems. These are tracks that have been inspiring us at home, in the office, while DJing, and on the dancefloor.

In the cross-genre spirit of the series, for Volume 8 we have selected music from the worlds of soul, boogie, disco-reggae, jazz-funk, and Latin, with a hefty chunk of beloved Brazilian music. Pulling these compilations together is always a highlight of our year, and eight volumes in, we feel this is one of our strongest to date.

The album’s journey begins with a heartfelt epic by As Ganhadeiras de Itapuã, from the Bahian town of Itapuã. It’s an area of Brazil that holds a special place in David ‘Mr Bongo’ Buttle’s heart, and where he first met our dear friend, Luciano Rodrigues Dos Santos, to whose memory this compilation is dedicated to.

Staying in Northern Brazil, next up is a contemporary dancefloor gem by Ubunto, a DJ and producer from Salvador, which also features As Ganhadeiras de Itapuã. The raw, dusty, punchy sounds of zabumba drummer Castanheiro and the furious guitar-heavy dancer by Tyaraju & Dutra are just two more examples of the Brazilian beauties included on the compilation.

There is also a heavy dose of soul music on this volume. The Canadian-gospel sounds of Trevor Dandy, a modern-soul rarity by Wil Collins & Willpower (which has been on our list for years), and a soul-stepper masterpiece by Tommy McGee, are just a handful of the highlights. Not stopping there, we are incredibly proud to present an exclusive rework of The Sylvers' ‘Wish That I Could Talk To You’ by the legendary Kenny Dope. Kenny has excelled himself with this one, fattening up the drums while bringing more drama to the horns and strings. The song now feels more contemporary yet still stays true to its roots. Complete genius!

Elsewhere on the compilation, you’ll find a cosmic reggae-not-reggae disco oddity by Tapper Zukie, a South African jazz-funk-disco groover by Mac Mathunjwa, a sought-after Brazilian compacto by Eduardo Araújo, and a Brit-funk / boogie treasure by Powerline.

Traversing time, genre, and location, all the tracks on Volume 8 are favourites for their own unique reasons. Music will forever be a constant source of comfort, able to affect you deeply in the most meaningful ways. It’s the gift that keeps giving, and there is so much more to learn, discover, and share, both old and new.

VA - Universal Love: 10 Years of Love Injection compiled by Barbie Bertisch & Paul Raffaele

Universal Love: 10 Years of Love Injection is a triple LP collection of genre crossing, open- eared, open-minded tracks which celebrate not only the ten year existence of Love Injection as a 'zine, record label and radio show but also the New York parties that acted as the inspiration and raison d'être for Love Injection's birth and evolution.

Indeed it was at Mancuso's iconic parties at The Loft where Love Injection founders and compilers of this collection, Barbie Bertisch and Paul Raffaele, first came up with Love Injection as the name for their project, literally whilst they were dancing to the NYC classic by Trussel. Furthermore it was the eclectic ethos of The Loft that inspired their own Universal Love parties. It was these events that funded the monthly, printed 'Zine and it is this 'Zine which included interviews and features with and on diverse musical contributors as musclecars, Patti Kane, Jaimie Branch, Isiah Collier, Kamasi Washington and major contributors to the NYC club scenes from the wider arts.

This diversity and inclusion that reflects the city of New York is also reflected in the 14 tracks collated for Universal Love: 10 Years of Love Injection, including hidden producers Joe Claussell, John Morales and Maurice Fulton. It is clear from its psychedelic blues opening track , its electro interpretation of a Bossa Nova classic, fusions of Soul and Rumba, a Japanese techno reimagining of a Chicago House classic and a track order that could only have been realised by people who understand how a DJ set is built that this compilation is a must have for DJs, dancers and free thinking music lovers alike.

Universal Love: 10 Years of Love Injection is more than a celebration of an anniversary; it is an encapsulation of how a vibrant scene is created and built through the curation and selection of the myriad musical options, selectors, music makers and club goers who all contribute. This really is an amazing compilation.

Gary Bartz and new London ensemble Your Brother‘s Keeper collaborate on Where Rivers Meet, a deeply intuitive new studio album capturing a rare meeting between generations of jazz musicians. Released on June 19, 2026 via Brownswood Recordings, as the label celebrates its 20th anniversary, the record brings together Bartz’s jazz lineage and a new collective emerging from London’s vibrant jazz scene. The result is music that unfolds with openness and intensity, guided by deep listening and collective improvisation.

At the centre of the project is Bartz, one of the most influential voices in modern jazz. A saxophonist whose career spans more than five decades, Bartz emerged performing with Charles Mingus, Max Roach and Art Blakey before joining Miles Davis during the trumpeter’s electrifying early-1970s period. He soon became a defining figure of the spiritual jazz movement through his celebrated NTU Troop recordings, creating a body of work that continues to resonate across generations of musicians and listeners alike. His playing - lyrical, searching and unmistakably soulful - remains one of the most distinctive voices in jazz.

The album also marks the arrival of Your Brother‘s Keeper, a new collective assembled by drummer and producer Jake Long (Maisha) and rooted and shared in musical dialogue and improvisation. Featuring Ali MacSween (piano, synthesizers and modular FX), Axel Kaner-Lidstrom (trumpet), Twm Dylan (double bass), Tim Doyle (percussion) and Chelsea Carmichael (tenor saxophone), alongside Long on drums, the group reflects a scene that has reshaped the sound of contemporary jazz over the past decade.

A beat compilation by Japanese beatmakers, curated by Detroit legend House Shoes.

For this project, Chikaramanga (TRES / Giant Panda) gathered beats from across Japan, with House Shoes curating the final track selection and overseeing the artwork—in the tradition of his Street Corner Music releases.

Bringing together artists across styles, generations, and hometowns, the project reflects the depth and range of Japan’s beat scene today.

This project features 10 Japanese beatmakers, including BALLHEAD, winner of Can I Beat It? 2025, alongside globally respected artists such as BudaMunk, ill-sugi, and tajima hal, as well as Lark Chillout of the legendary crew A.Y.B.FORCE.

Also featured are ariosounds, finalist of BEAT GRAND PRIX 2023 and runner-up at Can I Beat It?; DJ SHUCREAM and Tommy Beats of LORE BEHIND, both active as SP-404MKII instructors; KAPSOUL, a Japan-born producer based in Los Angeles bridging underground scenes; and Pone, a 17-year-old beatmaker representing the next generation of Japan’s beat culture.

Brown Spirits - Brown Spirits 1-3

Soul Jazz Records release three new albums from the Australian psych/funk/krautrock group Brown Spirits. All three albums are super-limited one-off special coloured vinyl pressings of just 500 copies each that will all be deleted on the day of release.

These albums were originally released in long-deleted very short run-editions - either self-released in Australia or on a small German psych label. No copies of Brown Spirits #2 or Brown Spirits #3 are currently available anywhere in the world. Both of Brown Spirits two earlier releases for Soul Jazz Records, ‘Cosmic Seeds’ and ‘Solitary Transmissions’, are also sold out on vinyl.

Brown Spirits are a super-heavy psychedelic three-piece band from the suburbs of Melbourne, Australia, home to an ever-growing local music scene that includes Amyl and the Sniffers, King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizard, Tropical Fuck Storm and more.

musclecars - Sugar Honey Iced Tea! Double Honey Pack 2 (Remixes from Mark Francis & AmFlow)

Taken from musclecars’ 2024 masterpiece album Sugar Honey Iced Tea, this Double Honey Pack Part 2 features remixes of “Tonight,” “Ha Ya! (Eternal Life),” remixed by Adam Rios, and “Water,” remixed by Mark Francis. Alongside their accompanying instrumentals, these versions take the already outstanding originals to a whole new dancefloor level, driven by bold basslines and rich encapsulations of Black music excellence.

Adam Rios and Mark Lewis are the production duo AmFlow. Mark Lewis began DJing in the mid-1980s around Newark, New Jersey, before launching the house music community platform Buttersoulcafe, built around the message: “it’s about the music.” The platform reached listeners in over 70 countries.

After returning to the local club scene in 2010 with a monthly party, Lewis moved into production and remix work, earning support from Timmy Regisford and releasing music on labels including Restricted Access and Tony Records. He later hosted the FLOW parties at Club Elevation and, in 2016, co-founded AMFLOW Music with Adam Rios. He continues to produce and DJ soulful, Afro and club-oriented sets.

Adam Rios has worked with Louie Vega on releases for Vega Records and has collaborated with artists including Erykah Badu, Cleo Sol and Koffee. His production work spans House, Broken Beat, R&B, Nu-Jazz and Soulful House.

Mark Francis is a DJ who worked alongside Timmy Regisford at New York City’s legendary Club Shelter and has developed a distinctive style built on seamless blends and rhythmic journeys for the dancefloor.

It is fitting that this five-track digital EP arrives as BBE Music celebrates 30 years of releasing innovative Black music across genres and continents.

The musclecars duo — Brandon Weems and Craig Handfield — use the Sugar Honey Iced Tea album to explore the nuances of their daily lives, environment and the Afro-American experience through sonic storytelling. These remixes of “Tonight,” “Ha Ya! (Eternal Life)” and “Water” add further chapters and perspectives to that story, making this release an essential addition to any music collection.

BBE - J Jazz volume 5: Deep Modern Jazz From Japan 1970-1988

BBE Music’s celebrated J Jazz compilation series reaches its fifth and final volume in early 2026, culminating in a track list that maintains the exceptionally high standard first set with volume one back in 2018.

This final volume features a selection of tracks that is as diverse as it is deep, reflecting the rich and varied Japanese jazz scene that spanned from the late 1960s to the late 1980s, a golden era of innovation and creativity. J Jazz volume 5 sees compilers Tony Higgins and Mike Peden dig ever deeper into their respective record collections to reveal tracks that encompass myriad styles including white hot jazz funk fusion from Toshiyuki Honda (Eastern Legacy) and Mikio Masuda (Sonic Barrier), super rare ethnic jazz crossover by Crystal Zone - their one-off 45 promo release from 1971, Rai Rai, a deconstructed and abstract jazz classic by Yasuhiro Kohno with his solo piano rendition of My Favourite Things, and Mile and Half’s skin-tearing, shredding freak-out from their mega rare private press album. A track that is so relentless, it leaves the listener in need of oxygen and a Valium.

These hand-picked selections sit alongside other specially chosen numbers that embrace hard-driving samba (Seiichi Nakumura’s Judy’s Samba), epic head-nodding soul jazz (Masaru Imada’s World Line), psychedelic private press fusion (Aoyama Gakuin 101’s Fervor), angular post-bop tear-ups (Akia Miyazawa’s Nijimasu), intense and insistent fusion (Motohiko Hino’s Olive Step), serene cinematic pianism (Hideo Ichikawa’s On the Trade Wind) and tripped-out hallucinogenic tribal funky jazz (Masahiko Sato’s Garandoh’s Africa to Africa).

Most of the tracks on this collection are being reissued for the first time, many of them only available previously on extremely limited and mega-rare private press or independent releases. J Jazz volume 5 is a fitting end to a compilation series that helped create a new audience and appreciation of Japanese jazz.

Some of the albums the tracks are drawn from are featured in the large format book J Jazz: Modern and Free Jazz from Japan 1954-1988, by Tony Higgins and Mike Peden, published by BBE Music in 2024.

With almost 7000 words of extensive sleeve notes, J Jazz volume 5 comes in a triple 180g vinyl set inside a deluxe gatefold sleeve with obi strip, and comes with a 4- page insert, with photographs from the renowned Tokyo Jazz Joints project. It is also available as a double CD and digital download.

Mastered at the Grammy-nominated Carvery Studio by Frank Merritt, this latest collection is a worthy successor to the preceding four volumes that set the bar so high. The J Jazz series is curated for BBE Music by Tony Higgins and Mike Peden.

Brian Jackson - Now More Than Ever

'Collaboration is stimulating, it's in my blood.' Thus speaks Brian Jackson and his philosophy for making music and it's indeed collaboration that runs through this amazing album of reimagined and revisited songs from his artistic past. Featuring artists such as Black Thought, Rahsaan Patterson, Josh Milan, Moodymann, Omar, J. Ivy and others and being produced by Masters At Work, ‘Now More Than Ever’ takes the enduring classic tracks that Brian Jackson made with Gil Scott-Heron and places them in the now over nineteen tracks and across a triple vinyl LP, Double CD and digital release.

Songs such as Lady Day & John Coltrane, The Revolution Will Not Be Televised, Home Is Where The Hatred Is, Winter In America, The Bottle and more soundtracked a generational movement of Black Consciousness in the 70s and 80s. As Brian says, 'This album is one way to connect to what we were about in the 70s; we were about change and this is part of the lineage of resistance. These tracks mark a period of time when resistance was essential and now a younger generation has picked them up.'

'As young men in their twenties, we (Brian and Gil) just wrote about what we saw and were feeling and people interpreted these songs in ways we never thought about but as Sly stone said the song comes from me but it's for you.' This statement from Brian perfectly sums up the collaborative nature of Now More Than Ever and the relevance of these songs in a contemporary perspective can be perfectly summed up by the songs themselves.

The formidable stable of artists contributing to each track and the excellent production from Louie Vega and Kenny 'Dope' Gonzalez make this album an event in itself. However, these songs are there to be enjoyed as a canon or as individual masterpieces, whether on the dancefloor or on a home system.

Valtteri Laurell & Ricky-Tick Big Band - Visions of Dilla

Finnish jazz producer Valtteri Laurell reworks some of J Dilla’s most iconic beats into adventurous big band versions.

With drummer/producer Teddy Rok (Teppo Mäkynen of Five Corners Quintet, Stance Bros. etc.), flutist extraordinaire Elena Pinderhughes and Laurell’s own 17-piece Ricky-Tick Big Band, he creates a big band album that you never thought you would hear.

Using the sparse and visionary beats of J Dilla as a starting point, Laurell has composed and arranged material on top of the original versions, performed by Ricky-Tick Big Band. ”My original idea was to write very abstract big band moments, that would be like samples Dilla might have used in his work. During the process though, on some of the tracks I started to feel more of a Bob James or Henry Mancini vibe in the arrangements, so the end result is a hybrid of those worlds. Naturally, the spirit of Gil Evans and the later work of Duke Ellington is also floating in the air".

To create a strong connection with the original material, Laurell asked Dilla-aficionado and drummer/producer Teppo ”Teddy Rok” Mäkynen to work with him on the rhythmic side of the pieces. Teddy Rok also mixed the album. As a special guest star, flutist Elena Pinderhughes is featured on Won’t Do and Rico Suave Bossa Nova. Ricky-Tick Big Band, which Laurell founded in 2010 is also well on display here, with rising baritone sax star Linda Fredriksson featured on Beej-n-Dem and trumpetist Jukka Eskola featured on Y’All Ain’t Ready.

Known for his role in shaping the bruk sound through projects like New Sector Movements, IG Culture leans into the track’s percussive core, expanding its rhythmic complexity while preserving the warmth and spirit of the original.

Elsewhere, Liverpool-based producer Matica steps up with a remix of “Boss” featuring Roots Manuva. Built on the original’s broken beat backbone, Matica’s version pushes the track further into club territory, layering heavyweight drums and textured synth work around Roots’ unmistakable vocal. The original marked a significant moment for Oliver, reconnecting with one of his long-time heroes - a collaboration years in the making that serves as a reminder to stay true to oneself.

Elsewhere, Australian producer and DJ Inkswel delivers a vibrant rework of “Undefeated” featuring Goldbar. Bringing his signature blend of soulful house, hip-hop and boogie influences, Inkswel injects a new energy into the album’s opening statement, transforming it into a deep, groove-led club cut while retaining its uplifting essence.

Closing the collection, Marcel Vogel - the Amsterdam-based DJ, producer and founder of Lumberjacks in Hell - turns his attention to “We Are Love” featuring Megatronic. His remix amplifies the track’s future-disco sensibilities, reshaping it into a shimmering, dancefloor-ready anthem that builds on the original’s call to unity and release.

Instrumental versions round out the package, offering DJs and listeners further space to explore the project’s rhythmic detail.

VA - Kaiso Power: Sound Revolution in Trinidad 1970-1980

Kaiso Power is a collection of rare jazz, calypso and percussive gems from Trinidad and Tobago from the revolutionary generation of the 1970s, bringing radical new political vision and reclaiming ancient spiritual consciousness through music. At the dawn of the 70s a shift was taking place all around the world. The streets of Port of Spain thronged with Black Power marches, trade union demonstrations and Carnival protest bands - one epicentre in a growing global exchange of ideologies and strategies among Pan Africanist circles in Jamaica, Guyana, London, New York, Montreal, Lagos, Accra and beyond. And when the meetings were over, the revolution moved to the cramped secret dance halls, the Carnival fetes, the steelband yards. The music always had a sharp edge. Searing commentary has always been part of the various types of music in Trinidad, and in the absence of lyrics, the defiant use of the drum maintains the resistance, as well as the re-framing of the playing of European instruments to the needs of the message. Lancelot Layne, Delano Abdul Malik De Coteau, Andre Tanker, Clive Zanda, Mansa Musa were more than artists, they were teachers, community workers and advocates for justice. These recordings are as raw as an all-night Carnival jam, the horns loud, the percussion ringing out, the bass dripping with joy and rebellion. Under the modern influences is a solid rhythm, an unbroken connection to Africa, the songs and keys and cadences brought across the middle passage. These songs are a peep into the untapped treasures of a revolutionary generation, looking at the world with fresh eyes and believing that music was a central part of the mission to build consciousness and regain confidence.

The formidable forces of Inkswel and Reggie B have teamed up on Flat White Records to bring you "Mystery Man".

Inkswel needs no introduction having been in the game for over two decades and having already featured on the label as a remixer, it was only right to get him back for some original business.

The track features some unmistakeable vocals from Reggie B, another legend in the game who brings his signature sound every time.

On remix duties, Just One has flipped the original mix into a bruk version, consistent with his signature style when not churning out house as one half of KemeticJust.

VA - Soul Jazz Records Presents LONDON JAZZ CLASSICS

First time in print in over 30 years for this seminal jazz dance collection.

London Jazz Classics was the first album collection ever to be released on Soul Jazz Records back in 1993. The album brought together rare and obscure dance tracks in a unique mix of jazz dance and fusion, funk, Brazilian and Latin grooves.

The album was ironically titled - none of the music was from London, none of the music was traditionally classified as jazz, and all of the tracks were at the time practically unknown to most people. Instead these were tracks that were filling dancefloors in a nascent jazz dance scene in London being created by a small group of DJs – Paul Murphy, Gilles Peterson, Sylvester, Patrick Forge and a few others.

As demand for these rare groove jazz tracks grew, previously unknown records such as Alive’s ‘Skindo Le Le’, Doug Richardson’s ‘Salsa Mama’, Carlos Franzetti’s ‘Cocoa Funk’ and Emilio Santiago’s ‘Bananeira’ became sort after and even-harder-to-find items with original copies going for £100s of pounds.

These tracks became part of the soundtrack to this jazz dance scene which has now spread across the world. This music paved the way for the arrival of many of the UK’s new wave of current artists such Shabaka Hutchings, Nubya Garcia and Ezra Collective who today offer a uniquely London sensibility of fusing jazz with wide-ranging cultural influences – everything from afrobeat to soul.

London Jazz Classics was the first album to bring this jazz dance music featured here to a wider audience. More than 30 years since its initial release Soul Jazz Records are releasing this new 2026 edition, bringing the music once more to a new generation of listeners.
