VA - Revolution of the Giraffe
Launched in 2010 with the aim of bringing something new to a drum & bass scene that had become overly formulaic, the label has continuously pushed in new directions, often incubated tomorrow’s stars, and evolved beyond even that original grand ideal. ‘Revolution Of The Giraffe’ unleashes 17 tracks of bleeding-edge electronic music, proving that after 13 years, Diffrent still sounds like nothing else.
Core artists from the label’s distinguished history bring their expertise, such as drum & bass mainstay Arkaik and sound architect Fearful, who team up with label boss Dexta for the MC GQ-sampling ‘Old Skool’ — a new track with a classic Diffrent sound. And there are numerous debuts: A.Fruit reworks an all-time Diffrent classic, ‘Boxgroove’ by Dexta & Hyroglifics, into a glitchy halftime stomper; none60 bosses Silent Dust turn Dexta’s ‘SE4’ into a rebellious dancefloor juggernaut; and the mysterious Gaunt’s ‘Firefloor’ becomes locked ‘n’ loaded rave artillery in the hands of Pepsi Slammer.
Label stalwart Mauoq puts his signature psychedelic future dub spin on ‘Departed’ by Cuelock, who in turn delivers the ice-cold, grime-indebted ‘Pages Of Snow’. Lakeway conjures the epic ‘Even Though’, nearly eight minutes of ecstatic, spell-binding, hyper-rave wonder. Dexta goes solo with squelchy techno jungle stormer ‘Giraffes On Acid’. Even Sense MC makes an… appearance.
New-gen Diffrent acts are in fine form too. The inimitable BrandNewTrumpets opens the album alongside Macc; ‘We Are The Tightrope Walkers’ is a powerful spoken word piece that erupts into a hail of punishing breaks. No Nation, Sheba Q and BK Balance, meanwhile, turn out explosive, hi-tek junglism on ‘Too Late’. From Diffrent’s industrial-toned sister label Are We Really Alone? (A.W.R.A.), Amir De Bois joins forces with Fearful for the paranoid, jittering ‘73’; Tokyo’s Itti summons thunderous bass on the ritualistic ‘Rumbling’; and Croatian artist Spaj.A.S.E.’s competition-winning, mind-mashing remix of the first ever Diffrent release, ‘Everyones Mad’ by Chills, finally sees the light of day.
Always looking to the future, Diffrent also welcomes modern jungle visionary Eusebeia, who puts his ethereal touch to Crypticz’s ‘Could Have Been’, and Stateside up-and-comers Illexandra & TGRbass, who deliver the supercharged, elastic bounce of ‘Swampy Swami’.
Closing out with one from deep within the vaults, ‘Aftaparty’ is Beezy and MNTX’s ode to seeing where the night takes you. It’s a fitting note to end on, as a new era of Diffrent Music begins. Where will it take you? Join us on the ride and find out.
"I've loved every moment of the label so far: the fast-paced release schedules, the slow years, the podcasts, albums, singles, EPs, parties, etc. This compilation album signposts where we are at — a bunch of classic Diffrent artists, a load of new faces, and a few remixes thrown in for good measure. Each tune stands alone, but stands tall next to each of its siblings. I hope you all enjoy it as much as we have! The revolution is here, join the revolution!"

VA - 10/10
Rather than a vanity vehicle for his own output, Boofy set up Sector 7 in 2013 with artwork and some early beats provided by long-time sparring partner Lemzly Dale. The mission was to build out a label which pushed the sounds Boofy was drawn to in the club, pivoting around 140 and dubstep-influences but crucially always shot through with flair and spark rather than trying to retread old ground. That mission holds true 10 years in, with frequent flyers like Jook and Drone flanked by memorable, ear-snagging turns from the likes of Hi5 Ghost, Kahn & Neek and Commodo.
The distinctive qualities of all the tracks on 10/10 is the result of a purposeful drive by Boofy to present standout moments. As 140 has matured over time, Sector 7 remains committed to offering more than just faithful genre studies. Every selection, assembled with care over a two-year period, is a reflection of Boofy’s impassioned approach as a DJ. In widening the scope for the remix disc, he’s making clear he wants the label to grow without losing touch with the sonic foundations they first started building on. Sharp-eared heads already knew Sector 7 was a must-check for the freshest 140 styles, and their faith has been justified ten-fold on this expertly executed collection.

VA - Future Bubblers 6.0
On 18th November, Brownswood Recordings releases the 6th edition of the
Future Bubblers compilation. An expansion of Gilles Peterson’s network
supported by Arts Council England, the ongoing talent discovery and
artist development scheme focuses on developing unsigned talent and
building audiences for new left-field music. With support from PRS
Foundation as Talent Development Partners, the professional recording,
manufacturing and physical release of Future Bubblers 6.0 is made
possible. Unlike any other initiatives within music, the compilation
acts as a springboard for the musician’s careers with the cooperative
model providing direct revenue to the artists by a share of the profits
resulting in a sustainable income to work from. Previous Future Bubblers
include artists such as Yazmin Lacey, KinKai, MC Snowy, Forest Law and
Kayla Painter to name a few.
The 9 track compilation is a musically diverse collection of tracks,
fusing genres that span across Electronic, Alt-R&B, Alt-Hip-Hop,
Spoken Word, Neo-Soul, Jazz and beyond. Opening the project, Plumm
showcases her hypnotic vocals on ‘To Be A Woman’, a stripped-back, live
rendition of the track whilst siegfried komidashi combines layers of
instrumentation with his
dream-like vocals on ‘Voyager One, Lost’. Up next, London-based Zeñel
highlights their trumpet and guitar skillset alongside guest vocals from
Plumm for ‘Crinje’ followed by Jericho Noguera’s genre-bending single,
‘Keeping On’ which is dedicated to remaining faithful and maintaining an
optimistic mindset. Manchester-based Victoria Jane - who has gone on to
host her own show on BBC Radio 1 - highlights her diverse vocal range
in the emotive track ‘Good & Low-Key’ before Shirkers creates a
cloudy instrumental for Ceeow’s vocals on ‘Like Summer’. Maintaining the
ethereal sonic, Ceeow’s ‘Twice’ is reflective of his Rap and singing
abilities followed by Zimbabwe-born, Norwich-based Tadi The Great’s
Hip-Hop-meets-Psychedelic soundscape on ‘Catastrophe’. Rounding off the
compilation nicely is nowsm’s epic ‘Rough Of The Felt’ which perfectly
combines Breakbeat, House, and Experimental sounds.
Spanning just over 40 minutes, Future Bubblers 6.0 is an extremely
impressive assemblage of talent who have all delivered top-shelf
singles. Released both digitally and on vinyl, the compilation embodies
the spirit of the musicians as well as the team behind Future Bubblers.

Horsepower Productions – Crooks, Crime & Corruption
Horsepower Productions, and their ever present head honcho Benny ill, revered in underground music circles as among the key early innovators of dubstep, return in 2016 with their much anticipated fourth album: ‘Crooks, Crime & Corruption’.
Continuing their working relationship, which stretches back to the early days of 2000, for the design of the ‘Crook, Crime & Corrption' packaging, Give Up Art drew on the visual language of law enforcement — creating rolls of custom printed 'Police tape'. Each plain, unprinted 12" sleeve is wrapped by hand in the tape; sealing in the discs, and making each pressing unique.
An ambitious and varied record, it finds the group expanding their horizons and broadening their sound palette, while maintaining the unparalleled production chops that first made them such a force in the scene.
Their pioneering early singles sought to strip UK garage of its slickness, adopting a stripped-down, dubbed-out approach that emphasised roughness and powerful bass. This was music for real heads, not commercial dancefloors.
‘When You Hold Me / Let’s Dance’ launched the seminal Tempa label, and even the term ‘dubstep’ was first popularised in a 2002 XLR8R cover story about Horsepower. The 2002 debut album ‘In Fine Style’ stands as one of the finest documents to emerge from the UK undergroundl, while ‘To The Rescue’, which followed in 2004, saw the group play a vital role in shaping the direction of the music they had made possible. ‘Quest For The Sonic Bounty’ (2010) sees Benny and co. double down on their core strengths.
It’s certainly the most sonically varied Horsepower album yet. Rhythmically diverse, ‘Bak 2 NY’ and ‘Kuriosity’ unexpectedly draw from classic house, while ‘Criminally Insane’ is the perfect conclusion to the album, ten minutes of breakbeat madness evoking a crazed dash through rush hour London.
If previous Horsepower records were defined in part by a commitment to darkness, then the new album sees a certain amount of light emerging through the cracks. Just check the summer BBQ vibes of ‘Bak 2 NY’, or the balmy shuffle of ‘Curiosity’. At the other end of the spectrum the sticky weed paranoia and industrial clank of ‘Ruf Justice’, all gunfire and sirens over punishing sub-bass.
Two of the tracks you might know already. ‘Good Ole Dayz’ and ‘Justify’ – originally released together as a 12” back in 2011 – both appear here in new versions. ‘Good Ole Dayz’ marries dubstep wobble with an explosion of colour, while the decidedly psychedelic ‘Justify’ (a collaboration with guitarist Harry Keyworth) falls somewhere between Hawaiian surf and Morricone western.
The group’s love of cinema has always been one of their defining stylistic traits, and it’s in full evidence on ‘Crooks, Crime & Corruption’; there’s a refreshing patience to these ten productions, and a stunning command of atmosphere.
Immaculately constructed and immaculately realised, ‘Crooks, Crime & Corruption’ draws from numerous facets of the UK underground and further afield in order to take you on a compelling, wholly immersive journey.
